Noctowl (Japanese: ヨルノズク Yorunozuku) is a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves from Hoothoot starting at level 20.

Biology

Physiology

Noctowl looks much like a ‘normal’ owl, with a brown coloring and a triangle pattern of a darker shade of brown running down its chest. Its wings and wedge-shaped tail are dark brown like the pattern on its chest, although the underside of its wings is the same light brown as most of its body. It has bushy, cream-colored feather 'horns' that look similar to a trident or eyebrows. The ring pattern around its eyes and its talons are cream in coloration, and Noctowl’s beak and the nails of its talons are light pink. Addtionally, Noctowl’s irises are red.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Noctowl are nocturnal Pokémon. They have exceptional hearing and eyesight, can fly silently, and can turn their heads at a 180° angle to increase intellect.

Behavior

When it needs to think, it rotates its head 180 degrees to sharpen its intellectual power. It also silently sneaks up on prey without being detected.

Habitat

Noctowl normally only come out at night. They tend to make their nests in the trees of forests.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Judging from its entry in Pokémon Crystal and its sharp talons, Noctowl is likely a predatory Pokémon.

Major appearances

Ash's Noctowl

Noctowl first appeared in Fowl Play. A man was trying to capture a smaller, Template:Shiny2 Noctowl by using traps, but kept failing due to the Owl Pokémon's intelligence. After Team Rocket was sent flying, the Noctowl allowed Ash to have the chance to capture it. After an intense battle, Ash succeeded.

Ash's Noctowl was used very much like his Pidgeotto, but it also had access to Psychic attacks such as Confusion which contributed greatly to Ash's victory against Morty. Ash left his Noctowl at Professor Oak's lab when he set out for the Hoenn region.

Noctowl returned in DP182 alongside several other members of Ash's reserves. It will battle Conway's team in DP185.

Other

Wings Alexander also has a Noctowl, as seen in Throwing in the Noctowl. The latest Noctowl appearance was in One Team, Two Team, Red Team, Blue Team where it seemed to be the normal Noctowl size, not the smaller size that every other Noctowl seen so far has been.

Minor appearances

A Noctowl appeared in Aiding the Enemy.

Another appeared in Pursuing a Lofty Goal! belonging to a participant of the PokéRinger competition.

Trivia

  • Noctowl is the only Pokémon to be captured in its shiny form by a main character in the anime, as well as being the first shiny Pokémon seen in the anime.
  • Noctowl, along with Togekiss and Altaria, is only non-legendary Pokémon who are able to learn Sky Attack via leveling-up.
  • The inside of Noctowl's wings are only seen in Emerald of the handheld games, Noctowl's wings are also visible in Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
  • Noctowl has the highest base HP stat of all dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon.

Origin

Noctowl's appearance is based on that of the Japanese Eagle Owl, who were seen as wise divine messengers of the gods.

Name origin

Noctowl's name is a combination of nocturnal and owl. Its Japanese name is a combination of 夜 yoru (night), and 木菟 mimizuku (horned owl).

In other languages

  • German: Noctuh - May come from noctu (Latin for "at night"), Uhu (eagle owl) or huh (a sound to express shivering in German).
  • French: Noarfang - From noir (black) and harfang (snowy owl).
  • Korean: 야부엉 Yabueong
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 貓頭夜鷹 Māo Tóu Yè Yīng - Combination of 貓頭鷹 owl and 夜鷹 nighthawk. Literally "Cat-headed night hawk".
