History
Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon
Kiawe's grandfather debuted in a flashback in Young Kiawe Had a Farm! while Kiawe explained that his grandfather was his inspiration to become a Fire-type Trainer. He was mentioned in A Shivering Shovel Search!, where Kiawe told Ash that his grandfather used to warn him about lone shovels on the beach, as they could belong to Sandygast.
In a flashback in A Crowning Moment of Truth!, he hosted a past Wela Fire Festival on Akala Island, where Trainers get their Pokémon to wear the Wela Crown (Japanese ヴェラの冠 Crown of Wela). In The Young Flame Strikes Back!, Kiawe mentioned that his grandfather was once the protector of Kiawe's family's Paniola Ranch. In That's Some Spicy Island Research!, Kiawe mentioned that Hapu's late grandfather Sofu was best friends with his own grandfather.
In a flashback in Run, Heroes, Run!, Kiawe remembered what his grandfather had taught him as he and Charizard were diving towards the ground. He was later seen as an apparition created by Tapu Fini alongside Sofu before fading away.
Character
Kiawe's grandfather's wisdom and talents directly influenced Kiawe's desire to become a formidable Fire-type Trainer in his own right. Following his passing, Kiawe inherited Charizard and took on the Akala grand trial to earn his grandfather's Z-Ring. He had an immense respect for the power and grace of Wela Volcano, also instilled in Kiawe. Kiawe's grandfather took great pride in his ceremonial role as Akala's island kahuna and hosting the Wela Fire Festival.
