A Secret Base Trainer (Japanese: ひみつきち Secret Base) is a type of Pokémon Trainer introduced in Generation VI. They may have the appearance of any of a variety of Trainer classes depending upon the Trainer class chosen by the player they represent. When in the Secret Base of another player, all Secret Base Trainers except for the owner will have the name Grunt (Japanese: したっぱ Underling).
The team of a Secret Base owner or a Secret Pal is made up of the first three Pokémon that were in the player's party when their base was saved (or fewer if the player does not have that many). Grunts' teams depend on the Trainer class they are represented as. The maximum level of a base owner or Secret Pal's team is (Badges + 2) * 5
, but it is 100 if a Level Release is active within the base. A Level Release can be activated in any secret base, but only if the player owns one, which can only be obtained once the player completes the Delta Episode. The level of the Pokémon on a Grunt's team is the average of the levels of the base owner's team (assuming a team of three and filling in the levels for "missing" Pokémon with zero), minus 5 if the average is within 5 levels of the highest level on the owner's team. They always send out their Pokémon in the party order. They pay the player $20 multiplied by the level of their last Pokémon. They participate a Single battle by default, but a Proclamation can change the battle format to Double, Triple, Rotation or Inverse (single) battle, although base owners and Secret Pals will perform a Single Battle if they have insufficient Pokémon to perform the set battle style. The Pokédex is not disabled for battles against them, so a seen entry and the capacity to view other forms can be obtained for any Pokémon (including legendary, shiny and mythical Pokémon) through a base owner or Secret Pal.
