A trio of Slugma first appeared in Template:PSV. Professor Oak tried to capture them at the beginning of the volume, but failed. The Slugma later appeared outside Earl's Pokémon Academy at Violet City where they were captured by Crys.
Mack uses his Slugma to create illusions by generating waves of distorted air via heat, forcing targets to relive their worst memories.

Origin
It appears to have been based on a slug.
Name origin
Slugma's name is a combination of slug and magma. Its Japanese name is simply a repeated shortening of magma. Its German name, Schneckmag, comes from Schnecke and Magma. Its French name, Limagma, comes from limace and magma.
