Rain (Japanese: 雨 rain), known as a downpour (Japanese: 大雨 heavy rain) in Generation II, is a type of weather. It was introduced in battle in Generation II, and in the overworld in Generation III.
Rain (Japanese: ' Rain) is a type of weather introduced in battle in Generation II. It was introduced in the overworld in Generation III.

It will last for five turns if created using Drizzle (Generation VI onwards) or Rain Dance, or eight if created by a Pokémon holding a In-battle effect item. If created using Drizzle (prior to Generation VI) or encountered in the overworld, it will last until replaced.

If created using Drizzle (prior to Generation VI) or encountered in the overworld, it will last until replaced. In Sword and Shield, Max Geyser causes rain after dealing damage.

There is also a variation of rain called heavy rain (Japanese: 強い雨 heavy rain). Heavy rain can be encountered in the overworld or created using Primordial Sea; if the latter, it lasts until the summoner is removed from the field (and no other Pokémon with Primordial Sea remain on the field), the summoner is rotated out in a Rotation Battle, the summoner has Primordial Sea suppressed or replaced, or extremely harsh sunlight or a mysterious air current are created by Desolate Land or Delta Stream respectively.

The thunderstorm overworld variation, which was purely aesthetic upon its introduction in Generation III, gained an in-battle effect in Sword and Shield, where it is equivalent to rain and Electric Terrain applied at the same time.

Effects
In battle
* Increases the damage of Water moves by 50%.
* Decreases the damage of Fire moves by 50%.
* Allows Thunder, Hurricane, Bleakwind Storm, Wildbolt Storm, and Sandsear Storm to bypass the accuracy check.
** In Diamond and Pearl, allows Thunder to hit through Protect and Detect 30% of the time.
* Activates the following Abilities: Dry Skin, Forecast, Hydration, Rain Dish, Swift Swim.
** Causes Forecast to change Castform to its Rainy Form.
* Changes Weather Ball to a Water move and doubles its power.
* Halves the power of Solar Beam and Solar Blade.
* Causes Moonlight, Synthesis, and Morning Sun to recover ¼ of max HP (half the normal amount in Generation II).
* In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, rain causes the floor to become defused, preventing any explosions from occurring. In Gates to Infinity, rain also prevents Pokémon from restoring HP naturally by walking.
* Allows Electro Shot to be used instantly.
Heavy rain
* Causes Fire damaging moves to fail if used (including moves that change type, if they would be Fire-type).
** If a Pokémon affected by Powder uses a Fire-type move, it will take damage from Powder.
** If a Pokémon attempts to use Natural Gift while holding a Berry that makes the move Fire-type, the Berry is not consumed.
** If a freeze Pokémon attempts to use a Fire-type move that Moves that thaw out the user (such as Flame Wheel), it will still thaw itself before the move fails.
* Causes the moves Sunny Day, Rain Dance, Sandstorm, and Hail to fail if used. This cannot be subverted even with Cloud Nine or Air Lock.
** If a Pokémon affected by Powder uses Sunny Day, it will take damage from Powder.
* Causes the Abilities Drought, Drizzle, Sand Stream, and Snow Warning to fail. This cannot be subverted even with Cloud Nine or Air Lock.
Thunderstorm
* In Sword and Shield, causes a persistent Electric Terrain unless overridden (in addition to the usual effects of rain).
Outside of battle
Sliggoo will evolve into Goodra when leveled up while it is raining or foggy in the overworld.
From Diamond and Pearl to X and Y, Sweet Scent and Honey will fail if it is raining in the area, or if any other type of weather is present. In the Generation III games and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Sweet Scent and Honey are unaffected by the weather.
Variations
Normal rain
Rain falls. Found in all places where rain is found on the field.
Strong rain
Rains falls heavily, at a lower angle than normal rain. It is found occasionally on 212 and Exeggutor Island.
The difference from normal rain is purely aesthetic.
Heavy rain
Rain falls heavily and chaotically, with strong winds whipping through the air. This variation only occurs in the field when Kyogre awakens in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, or in the Battle Agency.
Thunderstorm
Rain falls heavily, much like strong rain does, and occasionally lightning will strike and thunder will rumble. It is found on 119 as part of the four-day weather cycle of rain, thunderstorm, rain, and clear. It can be found on 212 on occasion. It happens on predetermined days, such as the anniversaries of the game's release in each country. It also appeared on St. Patrick's Day; February 29, 2008; and Christmas Day (December 25). In Pokémon White, after the player obtains the Legend, a thunderstorm will occur on 7, where the player may meet Thundurus. After the player has met Thundurus, thunderstorms will occur on whatever route Thundurus is currently roaming on.
Strong storm
Rain falls heavily, although at a normal angle, and periodically strong gusts of wind will blow, like as if a real life tornado or hurricane is occurring. It is only found in Black and White. After the player obtains the Legend, a strong storm will occur on 7, where the player may meet Tornadus. After the player has met Tornadus, strong storms will occur on whatever route Tornadus is roaming on.

Rain (Japanese: rain), known as a downpour (Japanese: 大雨 heavy rain) in Generation II, is a type of weather. It was introduced in battle in Generation II, and in the overworld in Generation III.

It will last for five turns if created using Drizzle (Generation VI onwards) or Rain Dance, or eight if created by a Pokémon holding a Damp Rock. If created using Drizzle (prior to Generation VI) or encountered in the overworld, it will last until replaced. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Max Geyser causes rain after dealing damage.

There is also a variation of rain called heavy rain (Japanese: 強い雨 strong rain). Heavy rain can be encountered in the overworld or created using Primordial Sea; if the latter, it lasts until the summoner is removed from the field (and no other Pokémon with Primordial Sea remain on the field), the summoner is rotated out in a Rotation Battle, the summoner has Primordial Sea suppressed or replaced, or extremely harsh sunlight or strong winds are created by Desolate Land or Delta Stream, respectively.

The thunderstorm overworld variation, which was purely aesthetic upon its introduction in Generation III, gained an in-battle effect in Pokémon Sword and Shield, where it is equivalent to rain and Electric Terrain applied at the same time.

Outside of battle

Sliggoo will evolve into Goodra when leveled up while it is raining or foggy in the overworld.

From Pokémon Diamond and Pearl to Pokémon X and Y, Sweet Scent and Honey will fail if it is raining in the area, or if any other type of weather is present. In the Generation III games and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Sweet Scent and Honey are unaffected by the weather.

Variations

Normal rain

Rain falls. Found in all places where rain is found on the field.

Strong rain

Rains falls heavily, at a lower angle than normal rain. It is found occasionally on Route 212 and Exeggutor Island.

It is found on Route 119 as part of the four-day weather cycle of rain, thunderstorm, rain, and clear. It can be found on Route 212 on occasion. It happens on predetermined days, such as the anniversaries of the game's release in each country. It also appeared on St. Patrick's Day; February 29, 2008; and Christmas Day (December 25). In Pokémon White, after the player obtains the Legend Badge, a thunderstorm will occur on Route 7, where the player may meet Thundurus. After the player has met Thundurus, thunderstorms will occur on whatever route Thundurus is currently roaming on.

Strong storm

Rain falls heavily, although at a normal angle, and periodically strong gusts of wind will blow, like as if a real life tornado or hurricane is occurring. It is only found in Pokémon Black. After the player obtains the Legend Badge, a strong storm will occur on Route 7, where the player may meet Tornadus. After the player has met Tornadus, strong storms will occur on whatever route Tornadus is roaming on.
