The Aura Guardian Festival is an anime-exclusive annual event that takes place in Rota, in the Kanto region. It was featured in Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.
The festival celebrates the heroic acts and spirit of the legendary Sir Aaron, an Aura Guardian who protected Rota from a war centuries ago. All attendees wear traditional clothing, and period costumes are also available for rental.
A Battle Contest is held to determine the next honorary Aura Guardian of the Year. Up to 32 competitors face off in a series of elimination one-on-one battles. Ash and Pikachu proved victorious after defeating Kidd Summers and her Weavile in the grand final round.
Following the Contest, guests are invited inside Cameran Palace for a large dance takes place in Aura Guardian of the Year's honor. Ash was granted the privilege of holding Sir Aaron's own staff for the night as well by Queen Ilene. Ash later assumed the "Pose of the Guardian", holding the staff over his head in Sir Aaron's signature pose, giving the signal for the fireworks display to begin. However, while everyone, including his friends were enjoying the food and ballroom dancing, Ash was made to abide by tradition and remain seated in his throne.
