Salamence (Japanese: ボーマンダ Bohmander) is a dual-type Dragon/Flying pseudo-legendary Pokémon.
It evolves from Shelgon starting at level 50. It is the final form of Bagon.
Biology
Physiology
Salamence are quadrupedal dragons, who have newly grown wings. They are similar to traditional descriptions of dragons in medieval European tales.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Salamence have long, heavy tails which can catapult enemies that enter its territory yards into the air at an instant. Its extremely rough and sturdy body is quite tough and hard to penetrate, especially its almost metallic, red, blade-like wings. Salamence have long necks which allow them to take in deep breaths to store and charge very intense Dragon and Fire attacks.
Behavior
Salamence is an extremely vicious Pokémon. It is also arrogant about its victories by spouting intense flames into the air. This behavior may be explained due to the fact that it faced many hardships to get its wings to grow, and therefore, it is very proud of its achievement.
Habitat
Salamence supposedly lives atop tall mountains.
In the animeIn the manga
When Ruby was young, he battled a Salamence that attacked him and Sapphire. After being defeated by Ruby, the Salamence went on a rampage and destroyed a lab, freeing Rayquaza, which was in captivity at that time, in the process. This resulted in Norman being banned from the Gym Leader test.
In the TCGIn the TFG
One Salamence figure has been released.

Trivia
- Salamence is the only Template:Type2 Pokémon to have Intimidate as its ability.
- Salamence has the second highest base stat average of all non-legendary Pokémon, the first being Slaking. However, it is tied with the four other pseudo-legendary Pokémon. Salamence is also tied with many other legendaries for base stat average, including Mew, Celebi, Deoxys, Latios, and Latias.
- Salamence shares the same species name with Horsea, Dratini, and their evolutions. They are all known as Dragon Pokémon.
- Salamence is one of only four Pokémon that can learn a HM move by leveling up in the same generation as it is a HM.
- Salamence is one of the rare cases of a stat dropping by evolution, as Shelgon's base Defense stat of 100 drops to 80.
- Salamence is actually lighter than Shelgon, with 226.2 lbs, while Shelgon weighs 243.6 lbs.
- While Salamence cannot learn Iron Defense itself, it can be taught it as a Shelgon before evolving. It shares this trait with Beedrill, Butterfree, Dustox, Beautifly, Huntail and Gorebyss.
- Salamence is tied with Metagross for the highest Attack of all pseudo-legendary Pokémon, it also has the highest Special Attack of all the pseudo-legendary Pokémon, and the second highest Speed.
- Incidentally, Salamence has the lowest defensive stats of all pseudo-legendary Pokémon.
Origin
Salamence appears to be based on European dragons. It also has a similar color scheme to Devilman, a Japanese manga character. Devilman's wings are also the same shape as Salamence's.
Name origin
Its name may be a combination of salamander and menace or vengeance. Its Japanese name is based on 暴行 bōkō, assault, outrage, or violent act, and salamander.
