Snorunt (Japanese: ユキワラシ Yukiwarashi) is an Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It can either evolve into Glalie at level 42, or, if female, Froslass when exposed to radiation from a Dawn Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Snorunt is a small, black Pokémon with a round body, round fingerless hands and toeless feet. Snorunt's body is covered with a yellow-orange cone-shaped cloak. The back of the cloak has three orange rhombus-shaped spots on it.

Gender differences

No physical differences, however female Snorunt are able to evolve into Froslass when exposed to radiation from a Dawn Stone.

Special abilities

Snorunt is capable of several Template:Type2 moves, such as Ice Beam and Avalanche. Snorunt is one of the five Pokémon that can have the Ice Body ability. Snorunt apparently has powerful jaws, since it can learn Crunch and Ice Fang.

Behavior

They usually move about in small groups of about five or so.

Habitat

Snorunt live in icy caverns, but they're quite hard to find.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Snorunt's diet mainly consists of snow and ice, however, they are sometimes found with the Babiri Berry in their possession.

In the anime

Snorunt in the anime

Snorunt first appeared in Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snorunt!. This Snow Hat Pokémon stole Ash's badges, and so he chased after it. Ash eventually gained Snorunt's trust and it joined his team. After learning Ice Beam by practicing extensively, Ash's Snorunt evolved into Glalie.

A Snorunt made a cameo appearance in Camping It Up! where it was one of the Pokémon trained by the students of the Pokémon Summer Academy.

A Snorunt appeared in The Drifting Snorunt, along with its evolved forms, Glalie and Froslass, where it was almost captured by a hunter.

Trivia

  • Snorunt was the first pure Template:Type2 Pokémon.
  • Snorunt and its evolutions are the only Pokémon in the Mineral Egg Group that are in another egg group; they are also in the Fairy Egg Group.
  • Snorunt's Platinum Pokédex entry seems to reference the Koro-pok-guru, a race of small people in Ainu folklore. They are said to live under the leaves of plants in harmony. Interestingly, the Ainu live in Hokkaido, the very place in Japan in which Sinnoh is based on.
  • It is unknown if Snorunt open their mouths when using Crunch or Bite, as it was never shown in the anime.
  • Like Rhyhorn, Snorunt evolves at level 42, later than any other unevolved Pokémon by level. However, Snorunt also evolves into another Pokémon through a different method.

Origin

Snorunt is based on a "Yukinko", a Japanese sprite said to emerge when it snows, according to folk tales, as well as the zashiki warashi, a spiritual creature found in the folklore of Iwate Prefecture. It also seems to be a stylized version of a person wearing a yuki mino, a traditional Japanese winter costume worn long ago by many people in the snowy parts of Japan consisting of a conical snow-cloak made of straw. Generally, Yukinko are depicted as small elf-like creatures wearing yuki mino.

Name origin

Snorunt's name is a combination of snow and runt, referring to a small animal.

Yukiwarashi possibly is a combination of 雪 yuki, snow, and 座敷童子 zashiki warashi, a spiritual creature found in the folklore of Iwate Prefecture.

In other languages

  • German: Schneppke - From Schnee (snow) and Steppke (little boy).
  • French: Stalgamin - From stalagmite and gamin (brat). A pun on sale gamin (dirty brat).
  • Korean: 눈꼬마 Nunkkoma
