Origin
It appears to be based on a durian and brier plants. It's vines resemble military flails. The vines also resemble a fully-grown brier plant, just as its unevolved form resembles a seed.
Name origin
Its English name is from Latin ferrum, "iron", (or possibly, from Portuguese ferro, same meaning) and thorn, a protective spine found on many plants.
Its Japanese name may be a combination of ナット natto, nut, and 豊麗 hourei, splendor, or rey, a Spanish word for a king.
