Origin
Kyurem and its two counterparts Reshiram and Zekrom are based on the concept of yin and yang in Taoism. Kyurem however, symbolizes wuji, the absence of yin and yang. Appearance wise, like Zekrom, it seems to be based off a theropod and a European dragon and being Template:Type2, it may allude to the absence of energy, contrasting with Reshiram's fire and Zekrom's electricity.
Name origin
Kyurem's name may be derived from 急冷 kyuurei (rapid cooling, 冷 rei meaning "cold") or ゆき yuki (雪, snow) with the kana reversed. May also be from 零 rei (zero) and 無 mu (nothing). The "REM" in Kyurem's name may also be a reference to Rapid-Eye Movement (R.E.M.), which is more commonly known as dreaming.
