Porta Vista (Japanese: アオプルコ Aopulco and ハトバポート Hatoba Port) is a location exclusive to the Pokémon anime. It is located somewhere in between Vermilion City and Maiden's Peak. It should be noted that in the Japanese versions of both Beauty and the Beach and Tentacool and Tentacruel, Porta Vista was actually two different towns (Aopulco and Hatoba Port, respectively).
Porta Vista is based on Acapulco, complete with beaches, sunny skies and a huge ocean. It is a very popular tourist destination, and it was also the setting for many different adventures in the anime.
Brutella and Moe both own restaurants in Porta Vista. Ash and his friends had to help rebuild Moe's dock when they crashed their boat into it. Unfortunately for Moe, Brutella's restaurant was more successful and driving his restaurant out of business. With the help of Ash and his friends, Moe was able to bring his business sales back up. In the end, Brutella's restaurant was destroyed by Team Rocket's Gyarados submarine.
Porta Vista also holds a beauty contest, in which Misty, Delia Ketchum, Jessie and even James participated in.
But Porta Vista also has had times of despair. Brutella's cousin, Nastina, wanted to build a hotel in the middle of the ocean. However, the Tentacool that lived there were being disturbed by it. Nastina hired Team Rocket to get rid of them, but all they ended up doing was forcing one of the Tentacool to evolve into a Tentacruel and grow it to several hundred feet tall. It began destroying all of Porta Vista until Misty convinced it that not all humans are like Nastina, and that all construction would cease on the hotel.
Trivia
The fact that two different towns were combined into one in the dub is a side effect of Beauty and the Beach's initial pulling from the rotation. Without that episode in the rotation, the dub portrayed a wide shot of Aopulco from the prior episode to lead into the inside of Hatoba Port in the next episode, both of which were called Porta Vista to attempt to conceal any plotholes. When the missing episode was finally dubbed, the towns remained combined to avoid any huge continuity errors between it and the episodes surrounding it.
