Elio (Japanese: ヨウ Yō) is the male player character in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. His female counterpart is Selene.
Elio is never directly named in the core series. His most common name, Elio (Japanese: ヨウ Yō), is used in promotional videos for Sun and Moon, in merchandise, and in the spin-off game Pokémon Masters EX. The promotional videos also refer to the character as Sun (Japanese: サン Sun). Promotional videos and trailers for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon refer to him as Ray (Japanese: コウタ Kouta).
In the core series games
Elio is an 11-year-old boy who recently moved from the Kanto region to Melemele Island in the Alola region. Early in his adventure, Elio meets the guardian deity of Melemele Island, Tapu Koko, and quickly befriends Lillie, her Cosmog Nebby, and Hau. After receiving a starter Pokémon and Z-RingSM or Z-Power RingUSUM from Melemele's island kahuna, Hala, Elio begins his island challenge in earnest.
During his island challenge, Elio encounters Team Skull, a group of hooligans harassing people and interfering with the island life; the Aether Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting Pokémon; and Gladion, a mysterious boy who works as an enforcer for Team Skull. He also learns about Ultra Beasts, mysterious creatures that exist in a dimension called Ultra Space; and about Professor Kukui's dream of building an Alolan Pokémon League.
Pokémon Sun and Moon
Elio eventually finds out that Lusamine, the President of the Aether Foundation, is the mother of both Lillie and Gladion and obsessed with Ultra Beasts. She ends up kidnapping Nebby and using its powers to unleash hordes of Ultra Beasts across the Alola region and travel to Ultra Space. Elio and Lillie travel to Poni Island to search for a way to find her. After Elio has completed all of his island challenge trials, he and Lillie perform a ritual that causes Nebby to evolve into the Legendary Pokémon SolgaleoS or LunalaM, who takes them to Ultra Space. Elio confronts and defeats Lusamine, and they're brought back to Alola by Nebby.
After catching Nebby, Elio climbs to the summit of Mount Lanakila and takes on Alola's newly established Pokémon League and Elite Four. After defeating them, he battles and defeats the League's founder, Professor Kukui, and is declared the first-ever Champion of Alola. During the subsequent celebration in Iki Town, Lillie take Elio to the Ruins of Conflict, where the newly crowned Champion faces Tapu Koko in battle.
Elio is soon contacted by Looker and Anabel of the International Police, who request her help in catching the Ultra Beasts unleashed into Alola due to Lusamine's actions. Elio agrees to this and successfully catches all the Ultra Beasts roaming around Alola.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
During his travels, Elio encounters a group of strange pale people known as the Ultra Recon Squad, who are later revealed to be working with the Aether Foundation. When Lillie and Nebby are kidnapped, Elio follows them and finds out that Lillie's mother Lusamine is seeking to travel to Ultra Recon Squad's home world to stop a Pokémon known as Necrozma before it can threaten Alola. She successfully uses Nebby's powers to travel to this alternate world, leaving Lillie and Elio to figure out how to follow her. They travel to Poni Island and perform a ritual that causes Nebby to evolve into the Legendary Pokémon SolgaleoUS or LunalaUM. However, before Elio and Lillie can go after Lusamine, she's suddenly thrown out of an Ultra Wormhole before them, followed by Necrozma. Necrozma proceeds to battle and absorb Nebby, before traveling back to Ultra Space. With the Ultra Recon Squad's help, Elio travels to their home world of Ultra Megalopolis, where he defeats Necrozma once again and saves Nebby.
After completing his last island challenge trial, Elio climbs Mount Lanakila to reach the newly established Pokémon League at its summit, re-encountering Necrozma along the way. After Elio has defeated the brand-new Alola Elite Four, Professor Kukui arrives and presents Hau as his final challenge before he can claim the championship. Elio successfully defeats Hau one last time, making him the first Champion of Alola.
Later, Elio assists the Ultra Recon Squad in catching some Ultra Beasts roaming around Poni Island. But no sooner has he returned home that he learns of an evil organization called Team Rainbow Rocket appearing in the region. The team takes over Aether Paradise, sets up their base on it, and kindnaps Lusamine. Elio storms the base and takes down the members of Team Rainbow Rocket, including their leader, Giovanni, saving Lusamine and making Team Rainbow Rocket leave Alola.
