Pokémon world locations

The Team Magma Hideout (Japanese: マグマアジト Team Magma Hideout), called Magma Hideout in the Generation III games, is Team Magma's base of operations in the Hoenn region, located on a small island cave on the outskirts of Lilycove City.

In Pokémon Sapphire and Alpha Sapphire, it is replaced by the Team Aqua Hideout instead. The base is essentially the same, though there is more water, all Magma members are replaced by Aqua members, and TabithaR/CourtneyOR is replaced by Matt.

In Pokémon Emerald, it is instead located inside Mt. Chimney, with the entrance on the Jagged Pass.

Geography

In Pokémon Ruby and Omega Ruby

Team Magma's Hideout in Ruby

It is located in the same place as the Team Aqua Hideout and has the same features. It is located just east of Lilycove City, in an area only accessible after Team Magma has stolen the submarine in Slateport City.

On the inside, the player will find teleport platforms scattered about. There are also a number of Grunts to take on, including the team's admin TabithaR or CourtneyOR who will tell the player that Maxie, the leader of Team Magma, has left with the submarine to the watery depths near Sootopolis City.

After finishing everything in the Hideout, the player is free to move onto Route 124 which was previously blocked by a Grunt trying to train his Wailmer. Route 124 connects to Mossdeep City.

In Ruby, after defeating Tate and Liza, the entrance to the hideout is sealed, meaning the player can no longer collect any items or battle any trainers inside. This is no longer true in Omega Ruby.

In Pokémon Emerald

Team Magma's Hideout with the entrance sealed in Emerald

It is located inside of Mt. Chimney, only accessible if the player has the Magma Emblem. The entrance is located in the middle of Jagged Pass, and before the events of the Magma Emblem, it is guarded by a Team Magma Grunt, who will battle the player once and not leave his post. It is where Groudon is awakened by the power of the Blue Orb just before the player battles Maxie.

On the inside, the new Magma Hideout is very different from the old one. It is a series of tightly fixed caves that expand into different areas, with strange machines scattered around the place. In one room, there are excavation drills for digging deeper into the volcano. This hideout is less confusing than the old one, as there are no teleport platforms scattered about.

There are also a number of Grunts to take on, as well as Magma Admin Tabitha and Team Magma's boss, Maxie. After the player defeats Maxie, Groudon will be awakened by the power of the Blue Orb.

Delta Episode

During the Delta Episode, after Zinnia has destroyed the dimensional shifter controller at the Mossdeep Space Center, she storms the hideout, defeating Team Magma Grunts on her way to Maxie to steal his Key Stone. In Maxie's room, when the player arrives Zinnia has just defeated Maxie, and taken his Key Stone. After she announces her plans to head to the Sky Pillar to awaken Rayquaza and leaves, Maxie has Tabitha give the player his Cameruptite.

After receiving the Cameruptite from Tabitha, the player receives an Entry Call on their PokéNav Plus from Steven, who requests that the player meet him at the Mossdeep Space Center.

Magma Hideout in the anime

The Magma Hideout appeared in Gaining Groudon, where it was shown to be a large, mobile sea fortress. Having accidentally wound up on top of a Team Magma submarine, Ash and his friends were taken prisoner there, but they escaped in the confusion when Kyogre escaped from the hideout with the help of Team Aqua. Team Magma evacuated safely, but their hideout sank because of the huge hole in the side caused by Kyogre's Hyper Beam attack.

Team Magma Hideout in Pokémon Generations

In Pokémon Generations

The Team Magma Hideout appeared in The Vision, where Brendan was seen infiltrating the base with his Sceptile, while Maxie and Tabitha boarded the modified Submarine Explorer 1 for the Seafloor Cavern. On Maxie's orders, Courtney stayed behind in order to stall Brendan. While waiting for Brendan, Courtney experienced a vision of Primal Groudon attacking Team Magma. Despite this, she didn't let the vision disturb her as she started her battle with Brendan, giving the submarine enough time to depart for its destination.

In the manga

Magma Hideout in Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Team Magma doesn't appear to have a fixed hideout Pokémon Adventures, as Maxie only decides which places to discuss important matters in on a whim.

In the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga

The Magma Hideout briefly appeared in We've Found Team Magma's Secret!!, where Maxie was discussing with Team Magma about their plans with Mr. Briney and Peeko.

Trivia

  • Because the entrance is sealed after defeating Tate and Liza, if the player does not obtain the Master Ball here before that, they cannot get the Master Ball without winning the Lilycove Department Store Pokémon Lottery Corner or trading one in. This does not happen in Omega Ruby.
  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby, the Project AZOTH files incorrectly state that Team Magma intends to return the world to the beginning, to its original state. That is actually Team Aqua's goal in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, while Team Magma's objective is the exact opposite — to accelerate progress and development by creating more explorable land. It is unknown if this is an intentional or accidental error on the developers.
  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby, a Team Magma Grunt found here mentions that Maxie and Archie used to be in the same team once.
