Battlefield

The Dewford Gym (Japanese: ムロジム Muro Gym) is the official Gym of Dewford Town. It is the second of the eight official Hoenn League Gyms. The Gym Leader, Brawly, specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon. Trainers who defeat him will receive the Knuckle Badge.

In the games

The Dewford Gym is in the Generation III games Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. It is the second one to be reached during the game. The Gym is a pitch-black maze. As Trainers are defeated, the Gym lights up.

In Generation VI, the Gym is redesigned as a darkened exercise gym with a lit central hallway with conveyor belts that restrict movement. The hallway also contains switches on the floor that momentarily light up the side passages through the rest of the gym when stepped on, giving the player a glimpse of the maze before they attempt it to progress. Once Brawly is defeated, the Gym is permanently lit up.

When defeated, Brawly will give the player the Knuckle Badge as well as TM08 (Bulk Up) as a reward.

In the anime

Dewford Gym first appeared in Brave the Wave. Brock, May and Max are woken up by Ash so that he can battle Brawly. However when they reach the Gym they find Brawly at surfing practice. He tells them he will battle Ash later.

When Brawly finally does begin the battle, Ash is thoroughly annoyed. The battle is a two Pokémon each, no time limit rule battle. Ash sends out Taillow which is defeated by Brawly's Machop. Treecko then defeats the Machop, before in turn being beaten by Brawly's Makuhita which evolves into Hariyama during the battle. Ash is disheartened by this defeat, but Brawly encourages him to go on.

Dewford Gym makes its only appearance in The Haunted Gym where a Sableye helps Red navigate through the Gym since it was too dark for him to see.

Trivia

  • In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the wall behind the right-hand statue behaves like a statue: when the A button is pressed while facing it, it says: "DEWFORD TOWN POKéMON GYM". This was fixed in Pokémon Emerald.
  • While the number of Gym Trainers doubles in Emerald, the total number of Pokémon only increases by one.
  • The system of this Gym is similar to that of Morty's Gym in Pokémon Gold and Silver versions and their remakes.
  • It is possible to entirely skip this Gym as Flash is not mandatory. However, the player will need to beat the Gym to be able challenge Norman.
