Pay Day does damage, and scatters coins on the ground with a value equal to twice the Pokémon's level for each time it's used. These coins are picked up afterwards if the player wins the battle
Generations III and IV
Same as above, except the move scatters coins equal to five times the Pokémon's level each time. Starting with Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the Amulet Coin doubles the number of coins picked up.

In Generation I, Pay Day was one of two methods in which players could earn money once all Trainers were defeated. Further generations introduced areas in which rematches could be held, decreasing the usefulness of this move.
