In the movies
Prior to the events of the movie, in Crown City, Celebi was discovered and attacked by Grings Kodai, who reached into the Time Ripple it created. Though Celebi managed to escape, Kodai touched the Time Ripple and gained the ability to receive visions of the future, destroying all of Crown City's greenery in the process.
Twenty years later, Celebi returned to the city, unaware of the fact that Kodai wished to capture it in order to renew his ability to see into the future. While greeting some of the local Pokémon and making some of the greenery grow, it befriended Zorua, who was searching for his mother, Zoroark. After calming down several angry wild Pokémon that were about to attack Zorua, Celebi agreed to assist its new friend in locating his mother.
Soon, Celebi and Zorua were pursued by Kodai's minions. Kodai captured and strangled Celebi in an attempt to force it to reveal the Time Ripple's location, but Ash and his friends arrived and rescued it and Zorua. However, Celebi is left too badly hurt to fly, and thus relies on Ash and the others to get it to the Time Ripple before Kodai. As Kodai pursued them again, Celebi hid in Ash's backpack as Zorua (disguised as Celebi) and Karl's Bronzor lured Kodai away.
Ash and Pikachu brought Celebi into the Pokémon Baccer World Cup Stadium, the location of the Time Ripple, but Kodai, having defeated and captured Zorua, arrived and immobilized the group with his Mismagius's Psychic. Celebi was freed as Zoroark and the guardians of Crown City drove Kodai away, but Zoroark collapsed from its mortal wounds inflicted by Kodai. Celebi was brought to the true Time Ripple by Ash, allowing it recover its strength. It then used the Time Ripple's energy field to heal Zoroark, repaying Zorua for his kindness. With Zorua and Zoroark reunited and Kodai defeated, Celebi made the area's greenery bloom in celebration before finally travelling to another time, with Zorua promising to be its friend forever.
In the credits, Celebi is seen emerging from the Time Ripple and disappearing into the depths of a forest.
