In the movies
Karl first meets Ash, Brock and Dawn during the evacuation of Crown City caused by Zoroark's rampage. Overhearing their conversation with Zorua about Grings Kodai, he jumps in and introduces himself. Teaming up with Ash's group, he helps them infiltrate Crown City despite Officer Jenny's evacuation orders. Entering the sewer, Karl has his Bronzor use Flash to light the way, then explains who Kodai is, expressing his suspicions about him despite not fully knowing his true goal.
Upon emerging from the tunnels, Karl realizes that Kodai had manipulated footage in his broadcasts to force people out of Crown City. Using his video camera, Karl records evidence that a bus stop and a statue of the Legendary beasts still stand, despite Kodai showing that they had been destroyed. The group later encounters Joe, Karl's grandfather, and his friend Tammy, and they go to Joe's house, where they learn about the return of Celebi. Shortly after leaving Joe's home, Karl and the rest of the group are ambushed and captured by Kodai and Goone.
Aboard Kodai's airship, Karl and the others are soon rescued by Rowena, his colleague who had been gathering intel on Kodai. Armed with the knowledge of Kodai's true plan, the group returns to Joe's home. When Kodai uses a spy robot to overhear that the Time Ripple is located inside the Pokémon Baccer stadium, Karl rallies his friends to come up with a plan to stop Kodai and reach the Time Ripple first.
Karl leads Rowena, Joe and Tammy to resolve the misunderstanding between the Legendary Beasts and Zoroark. Karl also has his Bronzor help everyone else reach the stadium.

Karl fulfills his main role in the plan by taking advantage of Kodai's ego. Kodai, after absorbing Zoroark's illusion of the Time Ripple, boasts of how he does not care about the consequences of his actions as long as his ability to see the future remains, and that nobody will ever know the truth about his actions. Karl and Rowena film this confession while hiding within Zoroark's illusion. They then have the recording play throughout Crown City. This exposes Kodai's true nature to the public and provides the final key to his downfall.
In the end, Karl leaves with Rowena on a ship to escort Zorua and Zoroark back to Unova. During the film's credits, Karl sees Raikou, Entei and Suicune on a cliff, and films them. His video of Kodai's confession is used in the national news coverage of Kodai's arrest.
