Webster in the gate has a favor to ask: take his Spearow and the piece of mail it's holding to the man by the pond on 31, and the man will reward you with 44. You can actually keep the Spearow - if you let one of your own Pokémon hold the mail, he'll take the message, but not the carrier. The rewards stay the same.
The Ecruteak Gym specializes in Ghost Pokémon. These spirits take serious damage from Psychic, Ghost, and Dark attacks, and are usually unaffected by Normal- and Fighting attacks. However, a Pokémon with Foresight can disable these immunities. In addition, Pokémon with the Scrappy ability—like Miltank—can hit these ghosts with Normal attacks. Three of Morty's Pokémon know Mean Look, which prevents the target from switching; however, this can still be achieved through the effect of U-turn. His Gastly and two Haunter can drain the target's health every turn with Curse, but this requires paying half of their maximum HP. It is recommended to bring a few Full Heals or Awakenings in order to disrupt his Haunter's Hypnosis-and-Dream Eater/Nightmare combo.
Return here and speak to the guard again, and he will give you an Vitamin.

35 is a small path leading from Goldenrod City to the National Park, home of the Bug-Catching Contest. Wander south through the tall grass to find a Status ailment healing item in the first grove of trees, and 66 beyond the grove of trees in the southeast.  Head north into the gate.

Defeated, Morty awards you the Fog, which ensures obedience from all Pokémon up to level 50, and enables the use of Surf in the field. He also hands over 30 as a prize. There are two ways out of Ecruteak City. 38 leads west to the Cianwood Gym and Olivine Gym. 42 leads east to the Mahogany Gym. After receiving the Fog Badge, you can go both directions and defeat the next three gym leaders in whatever order you want. Before we leave, go east from the city and try to enter the cave on Route 42. A hiker will crash into you, and will give you the HM for Strength. This is required to obtain, so don't forget it.

B1F
Return with the HM moves Surf and Strength to finally explore the rest of the cave.
To reach the Ruins of Alph, take the north stairs down to B1F. Surf north to reach a fork in the road; the northern path leads to Puzzle 3, while the southern path, blocked by a boulder, leads to Puzzle 4. To reach the bottom floor, surf across the southwest pool of water on 1F to reach the stairs. Swim across another pool on B1F, and take the next flight of stairs to the north side of B2F.

Bug-Catching Contest
B2F
There is an Elixir in the northeast corner, and a Hyper Potion on the platform near Ace Trainer Nick. A wild Lapras appears in the southern pool every Friday. SAVE your game before trying to catch it.

The contest is free to enter, and the objective is to catch the one best Bug Pokémon you can find.  To do this, Trainers are given 20 Sport Balls, which are similar to Safari Balls, and allowed to use their lead Pokémon to help out.  The rest of a Trainer's Pokémon, and any items they may have, remain with the contest officials until the competition is over.  Any Pokémon caught during the contest will be recorded by the Pokédex, though only one can be judged in the contest.  The competition ends when all the Sport Balls are used, the Trainer blacks out, the Trainer leaves the park, or 20 minutes have passed.  After that, the judging will occur, where Trainers are scored on their skills of capturing rare and exclusive Pokémon.  The two primary factors that determine the score in the contest are the sum of the Pokémon's stats, which can be estimated by its rarity  and its level, and the amount of damage it sustained in the capture attempt.  The higher the Pokémon's remaining hit points at time of capture, the higher the score.  The Bug-type that was judged may be kept after the competition.

Pokéathlon Dome
Meet Baoba
When you approach the farm, you meet an old man named Baoba. He is the warden of the newly constructed Johto near Cianwood City, across the sea to the southwest. Swap phone numbers with him to receive a call when the park is up and running.

The gate's northwestern exit leads to a short path where you'll meet Magnus, an older man with a Poliwrath. He'll bring you to a new area called the Pokéathlon Dome, which is where you can partake in the Pokéathlon, a sports event that replaces Contests.  There are five courses: Stamina, Power, Skill, Speed, and Jump, which correspond a Pokémon's five performance stats. In each course, three of your Pokémon will participate in three mini-games; each event will test two of your Pokémon's stats. There are a total of ten games in all that are divided throughout the courses. Like the Contests from previous games, all Pokémon are permitted to enter the games. A Pokémon's different formes will have different max stats, so make sure you pick the right forme for the right course.
Moomoo Farm
The Moomoo Farm depends on its herd of Miltank to produce milk, but one of these cows has gotten sick. In order for it to recover, it must be fed a total of seven Oran Berries. Once its condition improves, speak to the two girls to receive a Seal Case and three sets of Seals as a reward. In addition, visit the farmer's wife to receive 83. With things back to normal, the farmer begins offering Moomoo Milk, which restores 100 HP, for pdollar500 per serving. They can also be purchased by the dozen.

When you go to register for a course the first time around, Whitney will appear, and will give Ethan/Lyra a jersey that they can dress into for competing in the courses. Unlike the contests, to update your Trainer Card, instead of coming in first for all the courses, a certain record must be beaten for each game and by doing so a crown symbol by the records. There is also a linked Pokéathlon for multiple players.
Olivine City
Outside of the building, many Trainers can be seen with their Pokémon, practicing for the Pokéathlon's various competitions. A woman on the far west side of the area will give away an List of key items in Generation IV to those who have an List of key items in Generation IV, while a man at a booth west of the building will sell Aprijuice, a type of drink that boosts one of the five performance stats.
Olivine City is a major port city located on the west coast. Landmarks include Olivine Gym and Olivine Lighthouse, neither of which is operating normally. In addition, the S.S. Aqua, a ferry that sails to Kanto's Vermilion City and back, is currently undergoing engine maintenance. Silver emerges from the Gym as you pass by, and mentions that the Gym Leader is tending to a sick Pokémon in the lighthouse.

The Aprijuice Stand sells a variety of different pre-made Aprijuice which change on a daily basis.  By default there are five different drinks that are sold from the three machines lined up at the Aprijuice Shop, each reflecting one Pokéathlon performance stat.
Hook the Big One!
Stop by the house south of the Gym. The Fisherman inside hands out the Good Rod, a mid-level fishing rod that is capable of reeling in a wider variety of Pokémon than the Old Rod.

Athlete Shop
Time for a Trade
There are two houses to the northwest of the lighthouse. In the house on the left, a Fisherman is hoping to trade his Voltorb for a Krabby. Voltorb cannot be found in Johto, while Krabby are somewhat common in these waters, especially with the Good Rod.

The Pokéathlon Dome, located at the far right counter, allows for the points earned from competing in the different venues to be traded in for various items, with each item only available for purchase once per day. The item listing changes on a day-to-day basis. It is notable that several of these items are involved with evolution, such as the Evolutionary stones. Once the National Dex is obtained, the amount of prizes are increased, with either new items, or older items that can now be bought on other days.

Olivine Lighthouse
Climb to the fourth floor, battling Gentleman Alfred, Sailor Huey, and Bird Keeper Theo along the way. On 4F, fight Lass Connie to reach 87 in the southwest. Walk to the light spilling in on the east side, and jump through the opening to land on the exterior platform, where a Rare Candy can be found. Head back inside to a separate part of the third floor. Beat Sailor Kent to reach the Ether, then climb to 5F. Pick up the Super Repel near Sailor Ernest, and take the final ladder to 6F, the Light Room.

Route 36
Jasmine, the local Gym Leader, is here tending to her sick Ampharos, Amphy. It would normally use its tail to illuminate the harbor, but has gotten sick and has not yet recovered to its full strength. Jasmine talks of a Cianwood City across the ocean in Cianwood City that specializes in a form of non-traditional medicine. She cannot leave Amphy unattended, so she asks you to retrieve the medicine for her. She unlocks the door to allow you to quickly come and go via the elevator.

Leaving from the National Park's east exit, check the Apricorn tree nearby to find a Blu Apricorn.  Battle past the two Trainers and you will come to a 3-way intersection, with the odd tree blocking the narrow trail.  Try watering it with the List of key items in Generation IV, and it attacks!  It turns out to be a Sudowoodo, a Pokémon that has more in common with a rock than a tree, which explains why it avoids water.  After battling it, the woman nearby will give you the List of key items in Generation IV, which lets you grow Berries as you travel, as well as three Oran Berries and three Pecha Berries.  Now head north to reach 37.

37 is the smallest route in all of Johto, but that doesn't mean that there's nothing of interest here!
40 is a seaside path that links Olivine City to 41 to the south. The gate leads north to the Frontier Access, but a man inside blocks the way for now. On Mondays, Monica of the Week Siblings can be found here; speaking to her will result in a Sharp Beak on the first meeting.
Besides a few Trainers, this route is also home to a trio of Apricorn trees.  The secluded grove produces Red, Blu, and Blk Apricorns, which Kurt can use to create a Level Ball, Lure Ball, and Heavy Ball, respectively. <br><br>
Continue north to Ecruteak City.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Ecruteak Gym

Ecruteak Gym

Ecruteak City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Morty

The Mystic Seer of the Future

The Ecruteak Gym specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon. These spirits take serious damage from Psychic, Ghost, and Dark-type attacks, and are usually unaffected by Normal- and Fighting-type attacks.

Ecruteak Gym

Defeated, Morty awards you the Fog Badge, which ensures obedience from all Pokémon up to level 50, and enables the use of Surf in the field. He also hands over TM30 (Shadow Ball) as a prize. There are two ways out of Ecruteak City. Route 38 leads west to the Cianwood Gym and Olivine Gym. Route 42 leads east to the Mahogany Gym.

Now that you have Strength and Surf (optional)

Now that you can use Strength and Surf outside of battle, why don't we collect some useful items in some areas we have been to before?

Cherrygrove City

Violet City

Route 32

Slowpoke Well

Ilex Forest

Route 34

Route 35

Union Cave (optional)

Union Cave, B2F

Exploring Union Cave's basement floors with Surf and Strength reveals two more exits that lead back to the Ruins of Alph. On the bottom floor, a wild Lapras appears every Friday.

B2F

There is an Elixir in the northeast corner, and a Hyper Potion on the platform near Ace Trainer Nick. A wild Lapras appears in the southern pool every Friday. SAVE your game before trying to catch it.

Route 38

Route 38

Route 38 is a tree-lined path that connects Ecruteak City to Route 39 in the west, near Moomoo Farm.

Route 39

Route 39

Route 39 is a quiet, pastoral road that links Route 38 to Olivine City in the south. The Moomoo Farm is located in the northwest part of the route.

Meet Baoba

When you approach the farm, you meet an old man named Baoba. He is the warden of the newly constructed Safari Zone near Cianwood City, across the sea to the southwest. Swap phone numbers with him to receive a call when the park is up and running.

In addition, visit the farmer's wife to receive TM83 (Natural Gift). With things back to normal, the farmer begins offering Moomoo Milk, which restores 100 HP, for $500 per serving. They can also be purchased by the dozen.

Olivine City

Olivine City

Olivine City is a major port city located on the west coast. Landmarks include Olivine Gym and Olivine Lighthouse, neither of which is operating normally. In addition, the S.S. Aqua, a ferry that sails to Kanto's Vermilion City and back, is currently undergoing engine maintenance. Silver emerges from the Gym as you pass by, and mentions that the Gym Leader is tending to a sick Pokémon in the lighthouse.

Hook the Big One!

Stop by the house south of the Gym. The Fisherman inside hands out the Good Rod, a mid-level fishing rod that is capable of reeling in a wider variety of Pokémon than the Old Rod.

Olivine Lighthouse

Olivine Lighthouse, 6F

Olivine Lighthouse

Climb to the fourth floor, battling Gentleman Alfred, Sailor Huey, and Bird Keeper Theo along the way. On 4F, fight Lass Connie to reach TM87 (Swagger) in the southwest.

Jasmine, the local Gym Leader, is here tending to her sick Ampharos, Amphy. It would normally use its tail to illuminate the harbor, but has gotten sick and has not yet recovered to its full strength. Jasmine talks of a pharmacy across the ocean in Cianwood City that specializes in a form of non-traditional medicine. She cannot leave Amphy unattended, so she asks you to retrieve the medicine for her. She unlocks the door to allow you to quickly come and go via the elevator.

Route 40

Route 40

Route 40 is a seaside path that links Olivine City to Route 41 to the south. The gate leads north to the Frontier Access, but a man inside blocks the way for now. On Mondays, Monica of the Week Siblings can be found here; speaking to her will result in a Sharp Beak on the first meeting.
