There are eight different subways, seven of which involve battling. Each subway is fundamentally the same, having a set of seven carts with a single Trainer to be battled, or two Trainers at a time in case of a Multi Battle. After the seventh battle, the subway will stop, the player will get off at the station, then be awarded Battle Points. From there, it is possible to continue to the next subway or return to the main station. The party is healed between battles, after which there is the option to save the previous battle on the VS Recorder, to save the game and continue later on, and to retire.
Multi Battles require a partner, which can either be another player via wireless or infrared, or the NPC Touya or Touko, depending on the gender of the player. The NPC asks the player what kind of team they prefer to team up with, based on attack, defense or balance, and adjust their team accordingly.
The level of all Pokémon becomes 50 while on the Battle Subway (except on the Brown Line), and the number of Pokémon to be chosen will vary from 2 to 4 depending on the subway line.
