Kalos first partner Pokémon
The Kalos first partner Pokémon are the Pokémon chosen by Trainers at the start of their journey in Kalos. These are traditionally given out by Professor Oak and are to be used to battle the first wild Pokémon that the Trainer encounters.
In the Kalos-based core series games, the player can choose a Fire-, Water-, or Grass-type first partner Pokémon at level 5.

In Pokémon X and Y, the player, Shauna, and Serena/Calem receive their first partner Pokémon in Aquacorde Town from Tierno, who was asked by Professor Sycamore to deliver them. The player's friend Shauna will choose the Pokémon with a type disadvantage to the player's choice, while the player's other friend Serena/Calem will choose the one with a type advantage to the player's choice.
Serena/Calem will have one of the Eeveelutions on their team depending on the player's choice, they will have Jolteon if the player chooses Chespin, Flareon for Fennekin, and Vaporeon for Froakie. The choice of first partner Pokémon affects which Pokémon Shauna will trade with the player after the player enters in the Hall of Fame. Shauna will trade the unevolved form of her first partner Pokémon, having received it as an Egg. The choice of first partner Pokémon also determines which of the Legendary birds will roam the Kalos region after defeating the Pokémon League—if the player chooses Chespin, Articuno will appear, Zapdos will appear to those who chose Fennekin, and Moltres will appear to those that went with Froakie. The middle stages of the first partners can be found in the Friend Safari.
Other games
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the Kalos first partner s' final forms can be caught in the wild via Island Scan on Poni Island.
In The Indigo Disk, the Kalos first partners can be caught in the wild at the Terarium. They are unlocked after upgrading the biomes through the League Club Room. Chespin can be found in the Canyon Biome, Fennekin in the Savanna Biome, and Froakie in the Coastal Biome.

Pokémon the Series
In Pokémon the Series: XY, Professor Sycamore hands out the Kalos first partner Pokémon to new travelling {{pkmn|Trainer]]s. In this series, the Kalos first partner Pokémon were distributed to Ash, who chose Froakie, Clemont, who was given Chespin and Serena who chose Fennekin. It is worth noting that Froakie cycled through several Trainer's but kept getting returned to Professor Sycamore. It was also shown in the Mega Evolution Specials that Chespie the Chespin was Mairin's first partner.
Pokémon Evolutions
In Pokémon Evolutions, Professor Sycamore appeared with Chespin, Fennekin and Froakie in The Visionary inside the Sycamore Pokémon Lab.
In the manga
Pokémon Adventures
At the start of Pokémon Adventures, Professor Sycamore sends the three Kalos first partner Pokémon to Trevor. When he went to get the package though, Xerneas and Yveltal were fighting and ended up sending Fennekin's Poké Ball flying, this was eventually found by Team Flare and taken by Malva. After some initial doubts, X chooses to travel with Chespin and Y travels with Froaky.
Trivia
- Greninja is the only fully evolved first partner Pokémon to receive an additional form that is not a Mega Evolution, Gigantamax form, or regional form.
