Detective Pikachu
Detective Pikachu was once an ordinary Pikachu belonging to Harry Goodman, a freelance detective who often works with the Baker Detective Agency. While on a case, Harry and Pikachu got into a car accident. Frank Holiday found Pikachu collapsed at the scene of the accident and brought him back to the Baker Detective Agency, but Harry was nowhere to be found. Pikachu developed amnesia as a result of the accident, and his personality changed drastically, causing him to act in a more humanlike manner.
Since then Detective Pikachu has been wandering the streets of Ryme City, looking for Harry and trying to communicate with the people around him. Eventually, he meets a young man who can understand him. He teams up with the young man to retrieve a necklace that a wild Aipom stole from a little girl, and later learns that the young man is none other than Tim Goodman, the son of his former partner.
After retrieving the necklace, Detective Pikachu brings Tim to the Baker Detective Agency. After Tim has gleaned all the information he can from the agency about Harry's disappearance, Detective Pikachu volunteers to come with Tim to his father's apartment to investigate there - after all, he wants to find Harry, too. At the apartment, they find a map marking all the locations Harry had been investigating and decide to visit one of them - a place called Litwick Cave.
In the cave, they meet Meiko Okamoto and Emilia Christie, two women who work for the news station GNN. The pair are being attacked by a wild Glalie, and Pikachu and Tim work together to drive the Glalie away. Unfortunately, the entrance to the cave collapses in the ruckus, forcing them to look for another way out. With the help of a wild Drifblim, Pikachu and the others manage to escape the cave, but before they leave, Pikachu grabs something off the ground that resembles a broken vial.
Figuring that the vial might be connected to the case somehow, Pikachu and Tim decide they need to figure out where it came from. They decide to investigate PCL, the research facility that it seemed Harry had been visiting before the accident. At the facility, they find the same type of vial that Pikachu found in the cave, proving that it must have come from this facility. While trying to determine who exactly the vial came from, they discover that it was being used as a container for a substance called R that causes Pokémon to go berserk when ingested. They learn that the researcher who was making R, Carlos Hernando, worked for the man who had Harry's car tampered with because he knew too much, which caused the car accident. Carlos is arrested, but they know that there's still someone out there who bought R from Carlos and caused Harry to go missing.
Detective Pikachu has several entries in Tim's case list:

Detective Pikachu Returns
This section is incomplete. Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it. Reason: Missing info from after the prologue |
Two years after meeting Tim, he and Detective Pikachu have become rather famous for their crime-solving work. Mayor Howard Myers gives them medals in honor of all the work they've done to help the people of Ryme City, as part of Pokémon Friendship Week. A wild Corviknight disrupts the ceremony by stealing Pikachu's hat, so Tim and Pikachu work together to retrieve it - and help a Pidove that was injured in the attack along the way.
Personality and characteristics
Prior to the accident, Detective Pikachu had a much different personality; Tim recalls him being cute and docile, and Amanda says he used to be very well-mannered.
After the accident, Detective Pikachu began to display a number of human traits: he enjoys drinking coffee, eating sweets, and solving mysteries. He especially loves the coffee that Pablo Millan makes. In Detective Pikachu, he is shown to be easily infatuated with attractive human women, but this behavior does not occur in the sequel. He is also interested in Tim's love life, teasing him about his relationships with Emilia Christie and and Rachel Myers.
Detective Pikachu is a bit egotistical, frequently complimenting himself on his own genius. He has a tendency to respond to people who call him a detective with something along the lines of "I'm not just a detective, I'm a great detective". When he gets an especially significant flash of inspiration while working on a case, he has a habit of declaring "A bolt of brilliance!" in a dramatic fashion.
Detective Pikachu has lost most of his abilities as a Pikachu; he is not very fast, and cannot use Pokémon moves, much to his dismay. However, as a talking Pokémon, he can interpret and translate testimony from other Pokémon.
The hat that Detective Pikachu always wears was a gift from Harry.

Detective Pikachu & the Mystery of the Missing Flan
Detective Pikachu appears in the animated short Detective Pikachu & the Mystery of the Missing Flan. He has decided to try filming his morning routine, as it's a popular trend on the internet, and has employed his friend Munchlax to assist him. His filming is interrupted by Tim, whose flan has gone missing and is blaming Pikachu for it. Pikachu insists that he hasn't eaten the flan, and Munchlax says it hasn't eaten it, either, so Pikachu works together with Tim to figure out what really happened to the flan. While reviewing the footage he shot of his morning routine, Pikachu notices that an apple in the fridge moved positions. This leads him to conclude that the apple is in fact a wild Applin that had gotten mixed up in the fruit they bought at the store, and it was the one who ate Tim's flan.

In the movie
Detective Pikachu appears as the titular character of POKÉMON Detective Pikachu. Detective Pikachu was created when Harry Goodman's Pikachu pleaded with Mewtwo to save Goodman. Mewtwo agreed but only on the condition that Pikachu find Goodman's son Tim.
