Themes are a customizable option for the Nintendo 3DS family's home menu.
Themes are available in a wide variety of character and game motifs. Many Pokémon-themed 3DS themes were created, often in the support of new products in the franchise such as new video games or Trading Card Game sets.
Themes change the background of the Nintendo 3DS's home menu. These backgrounds can be still images, but also either panoramic or even animated based on scrolling. Themes can also change the sound effects of scrolling and button pressing while browsing the home menu, as well as adding background music. On the themes list, multiple themes can be added on shuffle, changing the theme every time the 3DS is turned on, off or put on sleep mode. More themes were purchasable on the Theme Shop which is connected to the Nintendo eShop. Multiple 3DS themes also came bundled free as download codes with new 3DS systems and games, or promotional items in convenience stores such as Japanese 7/11 stores.
