Persian (Japanese: ペルシアン Persian) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves from Meowth starting at level 28.
Biology
Physiology
Persian resemble large felines, like mountain lions. Their tails have a distinctive whorl at the end, similar to their pre-evolution, Meowth. Their fur is pale tan with the exception of their black-rimmed ears. Perhaps their most distinctive feature is the red jewel in the center of its forehead. Many Pokémon, particularly those with Psychic abilities such as Espeon, Golduck, and Staryu, have similar jewels; Persian, however, does not demonstrate any affinities to a particular element, so this connection seems to be purely coincidental. Like Meowth and 'real-life' cats, Persian is capable of retracting its claws and bringing them out again when needed.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Its thick whiskers are very sensitive to changes in air movements, enabling it to detect its prey by movement alone. Persian's lithe muscles also enable it to walk without making a sound. Persian has the same scratching abilities as its pre-evolution, but is notably stronger. Persian can now wield the scarce Power Gem and Switcheroo moves.
Since it's a fully evolved Pokémon, Persian can use Giga Impact and Hyper Beam moves.
Behavior
Persian, although popular for their elegance, are extremely difficult to raise as a pet. Underneath its refined facade is a fierce predator. It will Scratch anyone, including its Trainers, with little or no provocation. One should be wary if Persian raises its tail straight up, as it is a signal that Persian is about to pounce and bite. Persian has been observed ripping its prey apart for no discernible reason. A useful trick to know when training Persian, is that if it is yanked by its whiskers, it becomes temporarily docile. The reason for this is unknown. It is known to hold its tail out straight if it is an experienced battler.
Habitat
Persian usually live in towns and cities but can also be found occasionally in forests. Kanto is the best place to find them.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
Persian is a carnivore, hunting prey and tearing it apart with no discernible reason.

Trivia
- In Generations I-III, Persian learned Pay Day by leveling up just like Meowth, but it no longer does in Generation IV, meaning that a Meowth must hold back on its evolution to get a Persian with Pay Day.
- Both of Persian's abilities can be used by a member of the Tyrogue evolution line (Hitmonlee has Limber, and Hitmontop has Technician).
- Shiny Persian has had its sprite altered in every generation: in Generation III it was changed from a tan color to pale white, and in Generation IV it was changed back.
- Giovanni's Persian is possibly a shiny Persian, judging by the fact the inside of it’s ears are not tan, but pink. This may explain why he values it so highly. (However, it had pink ears before Generation II, so this may be coincidental.)
- Persian's Crystal still sprite is different from that of Gold and Silver, making it one of few Pokémon to have three distinctly different sprites in Generation II.
Origin
Its appearance is arguably more similar to Siamese cats than its namesake, its species in Japanese is シャムネコ or "shamuneko" meaning "Siamese Cat". Others think Persian looks more like big cats such as Pumas. The gem on its head can make it resemble a Carbuncle, a Latin-American mythological beast which had a jewel on its forehead.
Name origin
Persian's name simply refers to Persian cats. It could also be related to purr, one sound a cat could make.
In other languages
- German: Snobilikat - Comes from snob, nobilis (Latin for precious) and Katze (cat).
- French: Persian
- Korean: 페르시온 Pereusion
- Chinese (Taiwan): 貓老大 Mau Lau Da - 貓 means "cat," while 老大 means an elder or rudely, boss. Possibly relating to Giovanni's Persian.
- Portuguese (Brazilian animé): Persa
