Terrain (Masters)
Terrain is a type of field effect in Pokémon Masters EX that affects all Pokémon on the field, based on the mechanic of the same name from the core series games. Only one type of terrain may be present at a time, with any new terrain put in place overwriting the previous terrain. Terrain can be used concurrently alongside weather and zones.
At normal game speed, terrains generally last for 45 seconds. This excludes time that sync pairs spend performing sync moves or max moves, but this includes time spent on everything else (e.g., moves' animation times, stats getting raised or lowered, taking damage from hail or a sandstorm, skills activating, or status conditions being applied or taking effect). At faster speeds, terrains last shorter to accommodate for quicker gameplay. However, the duration of a terrain effect can be extended if the same type of terrain is summoned again or if a Pokémon on the field has a certain skill that extends the duration of the terrain.
There are three types of terrain available in the game: Electric Terrain, Grassy Terrain, and Psychic Terrain. In addition, more powerful versions of terrains exist called EX terrains. Each terrain powers up attacks of the corresponding type, but some have other effects as well.
Effects
- Electric Terrain: Increases the damage of all Electric-type attacks by 50%. Prevents Pokémon on the field from being inflicted by Sleep, but it does not cure Pokémon were already asleep before this terrain took effect.
- EX Electric Terrain: Increases the damage of all Electric-type attacks by 200%. Prevents Pokémon on the field from being inflicted by Sleep, but it does not cure Pokémon were already asleep before this terrain took effect.
- Grassy Terrain: Increases the damage of all Grass-type attacks by 50%. Restores HP of the Pokémon that uses a Grass-type move by 1/16 of their maximum HP (rounded down) unless they hit themselves in confusion. (Using a Grass-type sync move or Grass-type max move does not count.)
- EX Grassy Terrain: Increases the damage of all Grass-type attacks by 200%. Restores HP of the Pokémon that uses a Grass-type move by 1/16 of their maximum HP (rounded down) unless they hit themselves in confusion. (Using a Grass-type sync move or Grass-type max move does not count.)
- Psychic Terrain: Increases the damage of all Psychic-type attacks by 50%.
All these power-ups raise certain damage by 1.5× after power boosts from the following apply: skills, the Physical Moves ↑ Next effect, and the Special Moves ↑ Next effect.
The effects of terrains are summarized in this table:
| Terrain | Type of boosted attacks | Additional effect |
|---|---|---|
| Electric Terrain | Electric | Prevents Pokémon from falling asleep. |
| Grassy Terrain | Grass | Restores HP of Pokémon that use a Grass-type move |
| Psychic Terrain | Psychic | None |

By skill
If multiple sync pairs enter a battle simultaneously with a terrain-setting skill that activates upon entry, the opposing team's skills will be activated before the player's team's skills, making the player's terrain override the opponent's. In addition, terrain-setting skills on the player's team will be activated in tactics order, meaning the terrain set by the last pair in tactics order will override those of the others.

Special cases
In the Legendary Arena or Legendary Gauntlet, every time the opposing Tapu Bulu enters battle—including every moment that it gets a new HP bar—the field of play's terrain instantly becomes Grassy Terrain.
Modifying terrain
Under normal circumstances, terrains last for 45–50 seconds of gameplay. If a new terrain is summoned, it will override the current terrain, resetting the timer even if the new terrain is the same as the current terrain. However, the results are slightly different when the current terrain is an EX terrain:
- If the terrain being summoned is the non-EX version of the EX terrain (e.g. summoning Electric Terrain while EX Electric Terrain is active), the duration of the EX terrain is extended by 30 seconds.
- If the terrain being summoned is a different type of non-EX terrain (e.g. summoning Grassy Terrain while EX Electric Terrain is active), the summoning will fail and the terrain remains unchanged.
- If the terrain being summoned is the same type of EX terrain, the terrain with the longer duration will be given priority.
Certain passive skills extend the duration of terrains. When a sync pair with one of these skills is on the field, as soon as the terrain is summoned, its duration will be extended by a fixed amount of time. These skills also extend the duration of the corresponding EX terrain when it is summoned (but not when it is extended by summoning a non-EX terrain).

Sync moves
Ignoring other sources of power boosts, the following sync moves double in power when certain terrain is active. For damage-dealing Electric-, Grass-, and Psychic-type sync moves, this power-doubling feature stacks multiplicatively with the type-matching damage boosts that terrain effects provide, which can make the power of those three kinds of attacks be at least tripled.
