Splash (Japanese: はねる Hop) is a non-damaging Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation I, in which it was the signature move of Magikarp. It has no effect whatsoever.
Effect
Main series
In battle, this move has no effect whatsoever. After selecting the move, it will simply show an animation, and then the message "No effect!" (in Generation I) or "But nothing happened!" (in further generations) will appear on the screen. Additionally, from Generation IV on, this move cannot even be used while Gravity is in effect.
In Pokémon Contests and Super Contests, the move does have some degree of usefulness.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon
The user will move to a different tile one ratio away. The user will inflict 5 damage to itself and the opponent if the move comes in contact with another Pokémon.

In the manga
In the Yellow arc of Pokémon Adventures, before Bill and Lt. Surge meet Bruno, Bill falls from the Onix bridge into a pool of viscous, corrosive liquid. He escapes only thanks to his Magikarp's Splash attack.
Trivia
- Splash is the only move that has been introduced that does nothing to either the opponent or the user. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, however, Splash will deal 5 damage to both any foe in the way of the attack and the user.
- Splash was originally the signature move of Magikarp, but since Generation II, other Pokémon have been able to learn it.
- Every Pokémon that can learn Splash by leveling up learns it as a starting move.
- No Generation V Pokémon are able to learn Splash.
- While the English name suggests an association with water, the Japanese name, はねる (haneru), can mean both "splash" and "hop" (although usually the latter). This explains why the move can be learned naturally by Pokémon such as Spoink and Hoppip, species who have no association with water but are known for hopping or jumping and why Gravity disables it. The translation as "Splash" was likely due to the fact that it was only available to Magikarp when it was introduced.
- This could also explain why Splash is not Template:Type2, as well.
- Of the 21 Pokémon that can learn Splash in one way or another in Generation IV, 15 can also learn Bounce. The only exceptions are Azurill, Feebas, Wynaut, Poliwag and Cleffa.
- Clefairy, Clefable, and Politoed, whose first forms can have Splash, can also learn Bounce.
