The Bird type (Japanese: とりタイプ Bird type) is a type that only exists within the Generation I and II games. It was removed in the Generation III games and has not returned since.

This type is famously known in the Western fandom due to the glitch Pokémon MissingNo. and 'M having it as their primary type in the English versions of Pokémon Red and Blue.

Battle properties

The Bird type is neutrally effective against all types, and all types are neutrally effective against it.

In the games

In the Generation I and II core series games, it is an unused physical type.

The table below shows all the defined types as of Generation II by index order:

Category Types
Physical  Normal   Fighting   Flying   Poison   Ground   Rock  Bird  Bug   Ghost   Steel
Special  Fire   Water   Grass   Electric   Psychic   Ice   Dragon   Dark

In the English versions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, there is a localization error in the dialogue of the Gym guide in Vermilion Gym that causes him to refer to Flying-type Pokémon as Bird-type Pokémon:

Japanese RGBY/FRLG English RBY English FRLG
ひこう タイプ みず タイプは
あいしょうが わるいぜ!
Birds and water
Pokémon are at
risk!
Bird/Water-type Pokémon match
poorly against the Electric type.

In the anime

The type has been mentioned in Song of Origin, the Japanese ending for Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.
