It’s time for Professor Cerise’s Pokémon Orienteering session! Three teams of young kids will head to Vermilion Port, and the team that arrives first (while spotting the most Pokémon en route) wins! Ash and Goh serve as guides: Goh’s team marvels at how many Pokémon he’s caught, and Ash’s team is delighted when he shows off his battling skills. But when Team Rocket threatens to steal everyone’s Pokémon, Ash and Goh come up with a combination move that sends the villains blasting off again! The kids are full of admiration for Ash and Goh, and the professor declares this Pokémon Orienteering session a rousing success!

Plot

The Rotom Phone's clock alarm starts ringing, though neither Goh nor Ash wake up. Chloe enters the bedroom and orders the boys to get up immediately, scolding them for forgetting that today is the Pokémon Orienteering event. Meanwhile, Professor Cerise and his lab assistants welcome the competitors, including Chloe's younger brother Parker, to the Cerise Laboratory. Ash and Goh, still half-asleep and rushing through breakfast, are announced as the event's special guides. Professor Cerise explains that the Orienteering event is to showcase all the Pokémon that can be found across Vermilion City. The children will be split into three groups led by Ash, Goh, and Professor Cerise, with the aim being to see as many Pokémon before reaching the final destination of Vermilion Harbor.

Ash's group comes across a Pokémon first; a Persian sitting in a tree. Soon three Meowth join it, with Ash scanning them with his Rotom Phone to give the kids extra information. The Cat Pokémon sense something and suddenly leave, leading Ash and his team to some sleeping Rattata. Persian and the Meowth pounce into action and quickly surround the Rattata. A Raticate soon arrives, sparking an intense exchange of claws and teeth between the two groups. Officer Jenny has her Growlithe end the battle with Roar before giving Ash a warning about standing too close to wild Pokémon. Ash explains that he was just showing "everyone" what a true battle was like. Jenny looks around to see two children peer from around the corner before issuing a warning to Ash about abandoning young children. Ash concedes that he was too hasty. He turns around and spots another learning opportunity, and calls the kids over to pat Officer Jenny's Growlithe. While the children enjoying petting Growlithe, Team Rocket spot Ash. Meowth explains that there is a Pokémon Orienteering event happening, and quickly comes up with a plan for the trio to make off with loads of Pokémon.

Meanwhile, Goh's team, consisting of Chloe, Parker, and a young girl, are standing elsewhere. The Orienteering reminds Goh of his day at Professor Oak's camp, remarking that he misses his childhood. Chloe remarks that he is still a kid, only for Goh to reply that he is a Pokémon Trainer. Chloe shrugs it off to end the useless argument, The team continues onto a park where Goh's eyes light up at the sight of a Pidgey. He promptly throws a Poké Ball and catches the Pidgey. Goh next turns his attention to a rustling hedge and scores a double capture with Nidoran♀ and Nidoran♂. Chloe suggests Goh focus on actually teaching the children something about Pokémon. Goh follows through, calling out his newest additions and scanning them with Pokédex function. Parker and the young girl alert Goh to other targets, and Goh adds an Oddish and Poliwag to his growing collection. As Goh celebrates with a cheer, Chloe declares that he is still as excitable as ever. She suddenly feels overwhelmed as Pidgey and the Nidoran start rubbing up against her in affection. Goh turns around and spots a passing Farfetch'd. He throws a Ball for an easy capture, however Farfetch'd uses its leek to smack the Ball back and right into Goh's face.

Ash and his teammates come to a lookout point and take a moment to enjoy the panoramic view of Vermilion Harbor. A flock of Pidgeotto and Pidgeot excites the children, so Ash pulls out his Rotom Phone to provide more information. Unexpectedly, Ash receives an official battle announcement on his device, alerting him to a nearby Trainer - a boy named Oliver. Ash is about to reject the offer, but his teammates are keen to see a real battle. With that, the Drone Rotom flies in to preside over the official Normal Class World Coronation Series match. Oliver introduces himself, revealing that he hails from Goldenrod City in the Johto region. The two Trainers take their positions while the Drone Rotom announces the rules for the one-on-one match.

Ash and Oliver simultaneously send out Pikachu and Meganium respectively. Oliver confidently declares that Electric attacks will prove useless against his Grass-type Pokémon. He issues the first move, a Razor Leaf. Pikachu successfully blocks the attack with an Electroweb. He dodges three consecutive Body Slams before striking back with a blow of Iron Tail. Meganium makes a quick recovery and fires a close range Razor Leaf at its opponent. Pikachu returns with a direct Thunderbolt. Oliver has Meganium shake off the damage and prepare to fire a Solar Beam. Ash needs to act fast, so he calls for a Quick Attack. Pikachu jettisons forward and directly into Meganium's powerful Solar Beam. Pikachu hits a post before landing on his feet, letting out a defiant cry of confidence. Oliver is stunned that Pikachu is still in the match and calls for a Body Slam attack. Pikachu delivers an Iron Tail to the throat, knocking his opponent out of the battle. Drone Rotom awards the victory to Ash and updates the rankings of each Trainer; Ash climbs from rank 3,763 up to 1,512. Oliver thanks Ash for the great match and promises to win in a rematch. The pair exchange a handshake before Oliver continues on his way. The children are amazed by the battle, and Ash reminds them that battling is about the friendship with a Pokémon instead of being cool. Ash explains that he hopes to win the World Coronation Series in his quest to become a Pokémon Master.

Meanwhile, Goh catches a Grimer, followed by an Ekans. He shows his teammates his collection so far using his Rotom Phone, which currently totals 37 different species. Suddenly, the same Farfetch'd from earlier appears. Goh tries a fastball throw instead, but Farfetch'd swings its leek and hits the Ball directly into Goh's face again.

The three teams soon meet up at the Vermilion Harbor. Two cloaked individuals, none other than Jessie and James, draw everyone's attention to an approaching "Lugia" as a part of their latest plot. Team Rocket suggests they try defeat the Legendary Pokémon in a Raid Battle. Ash selects Pikachu, Goh's Raboot is already fired up while Parker orders Chloe to use Yamper. The cloaked pair order their Raid Battle companions to hold on a moment before a giant cage drops down and traps the Pokémon. Jessie and James remove their disguises and perform their motto. The Lugia is also revealed to be a hot air balloon, aiding Team Rocket's escape with Pikachu, Raboot and Yamper. A powerful Aeroblast suddenly bursts Team Rocket's balloon before a real Lugia arrives to bring the cage down safely. Pikachu breaks the iron bars with an Iron Tail, freeing himself and the others. The Rocket trio call on Pelipper to deliver the Rocket Prize Master machine. With a twist of the mechanism, Jessie and James receive the powerful Flying duo of Skarmory and Crobat. Team Rocket order a double Air Cutter attack. Ash and Goh retaliate with a Thunderbolt and Ember respectively, however the winged Pokémon are too high up for the attacks to hit. Skarmory and Crobat follow with a combined Air Slash, though Pikachu and Raboot evade it. Ash turns to Goh and suggests Raboot use Ember on Pikachu. Goh understands Ash's strategy and orders Raboot use Ember at Pikachu. Pikachu deflects the stone projectile with an Iron Tail, giving it added momentum and sending Team Rocket blasting off.

Professor Cerise finally reviews the Orienteering results, and announces that his yellow team won the event. Ash apologizes to his team for the loss, but the kids reply that they had lots of fun. Goh's teammates also enjoyed their day out. Professor Cerise is glad to see his event was a big success and orders the children to never give up on their dreams. Chloe then alerts Goh to the same Farfetch'd. Goh pulls a Poké Ball from his pocket ready to make the catch. Farfetch'd readies its leek to make a return swing, however Goh delays the throw and catches the sly Farfetch'd off guard and adds it to his collection. As he celebrates finally catching Farfetch'd, Lugia is revealed to have actually been a transformed Mew.
