The Bird type (Japanese: とりタイプ Bird type) is a less common type that has been featured in the Pokémon games and anime.

This type is famously known in the Western fandom due to the glitch Pokémon MissingNo. and 'M (00) having it as one of their types in the English versions of Pokémon Red and Blue.

In the games

In the Generation I and II core series games, it is an unused physical type. Due to its absence from the type matchup chart, any potential Bird-type move would always deal neutral damage.

The table below shows all the defined types as of Generation II by index order:

Category Types
Physical  Normal   Fighting   Flying   Poison   Ground   Rock  Bird  Bug   Ghost   Steel
Special  Fire   Water   Grass   Electric   Psychic   Ice   Dragon   Dark

In the English versions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, there is a localization error in the dialogue of the Gym guide in Vermilion Gym that causes him to refer to Flying-type Pokémon as Bird-type Pokémon:

Bird/Water-type Pokémon match
poorly against the Electric type.

Beware of paralysis, too.

Lt. Surge is very cautious.

He's locked himself in, so it won't
be easy getting to him.

In the anime

The type has been mentioned in Song of Origin, the Japanese ending for Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.
