Poni Beach first appeared in SM104, when Ash went there in the hope of finding Tapu Fini, in order to battle it for his Grand Trial. He encountered some wild Sensu Style Oricorio that were dancing on the sand. He then discovered that Tupp, Rapp, and Zipp were nearby, luring the Oricorio towards them in order to capture them. Ash tried to put a stop to them by battling, only to be stopped by Hapu and her Golurk who had just landed on the beach, curious about what was going on. Hapu discovered some of her stolen daikon nearby and assumed Ash was behind them being stolen, only for Ash to explain that the Team Skull Grunts had kidnapped some Oricorio by trapping them inside of a bag.

After Hapu understood what had happened to her daikon and the Oricorio, she took it upon herself to defeat the Team Skull Grunts as punishment with her Mudsdale. After the grunts attacked her with their Pokémon, only for the attack to raise her Mudsdale's defence, due to its Stamina Ability, Hapu defeated the grunts Pokémon with a single High Horsepower. After their defeat, the grunts were scolded and ordered to retreat by their superior Plumeria. Hapu didn't want them to leave, but they got away too quickly. Later on, Ash had rescued all of the captured Oricorio from the bag and Hapu had retrieved her stolen daikon. Hapu then asked for his forgiveness after accusing him earlier. Ash accepted, only to ask her for a battle and be rejected. Ash asked why, so Hapu told it battling has nothing to do with this, before calling back her Mudsdale and flying back to her home on her Golurk.

Poni Beach first appeared in the Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc. Sun arrived there on his quest to deliver a Mirage Berry to Poni Island's guardian deity, Tapu Fini. Due to several Ultra Beasts having been unleashed all over the Alola region, the island had already been evacuated, leaving Sun without anyone that could help tell him where Tapu Fini could be located. Immediately after, a pair of wild Crabrawler knocked Sun down and stole the Mirage Berry he was holding, forcing him to chase after them to get it back.
