The Subspace Emissary (Japanese: 亜空の使者 The Subspace Emissary) is a single-player game that is contained within Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It is a side-scrolling action game with a storyline that is said to emphasize character development. Every playable character is a protagonist, including Pikachu and Pokémon Trainer.

The characters form teams based on the developments of the story. Masahiro Sakurai has stated that most hidden characters are unlocked by simply playing through The Subspace Emissary. A second player can join at any time, though the camera will focus on player one.

In order to obtain trophies of the enemies in this game, the player must throw a Trophy Stand at them. This acts just like a Poké Ball as it 'captures' the opponent when they are at low health. It also works against bosses, including Rayquaza.

Led by a being known as the Ancient Minister, the Subspace Army's plan is to cut apart the world and carry it into Subspace. This is achieved by two R.O.B.s detonating a Subspace Bomb and the minions known as Primid attacking anyone who resists. Now everyone must join together to stop this threat.

The first target is a stadium where Mario and Kirby have just completed a match. Meta Knight's airship, the Halberd, flies over and drops multiple Primid into the stadium. Seeing this, Peach and Zelda jump down to help clear them out. At this point, the Subspace Bomb is set to go off after two and a half minutes. Mario is launched out of the stadium while attempting to investigate it while Petey Piranha captures the princesses. In the first boss battle of the game, Kirby can rescue one of the princesses - the fate of the other is currently unclear.

Elsewhere, Pit sees the destruction of the stadium and flies down to team up with Mario. Donkey Kong's bananas are stolen by Bowser's minions so he chases after them with Diddy Kong. At some point, Diddy is separated from DK and comes across a lake with a burning spaceship at the shore. Rayquaza emerges from the water and captures Diddy but then Fox jumps out of the ship and makes a dramatic rescue. What happens from there is yet to be seen but it is known that there will be a fight against Rayquaza and interference from Bowser.
