Shadow Lugia

Shadow Lugia (Japanese: ダークルギア Dark Lugia), codenamed XD001, is a Lugia corrupted by the criminal organization Cipher. It is believed to be the ultimate Shadow Pokémon, completely immune to purification. As a sign of its corruption, unlike other Shadow Pokémon, Lugia's appearance changes from that of a normal Lugia.

In the prologue of Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, XD001 attacks the cruise ship S.S. Libra, which had been carrying many Pokémon to Orre. However, XD001 drops the ship in the middle of the desert leading to Cipher having to catch the Pokémon left in the ship.

During the course of the game, XD001 is mentioned often, but never seen. One of Cipher's administrators, Lovrina, tells Michael that it was she who created XD001, and reveals that she has perfected it to be immune to purification when he encounters her again on Citadark Isle.

Also on Citadark Isle, Michael finally confronts Lugia, sent out by Greevil to defeat the boy before the other six (also Shadow) members of his party.

After capturing Lugia, Michael will find that Lovrina was right — Shadow Lugia cannot be purified through battling with it, using colognes, or by any other normal means. However, the Purification Chamber, which was jointly developed by Michael's father and Professor Krane, will be able to do the trick, but only if all nine of the chambers within it are at maximum tempo.

Facing Lugia

The text on the Aura Reader is different with Shadow Lugia. It doesn't say "Oh! A Shadow Pokemon!" It says "The Aura Reader is responding. It is a SHADOW POKéMON."

You are generally meant to use the Master Ball to capture Lugia. Doing so makes the battle very short, ironic since the battle with Lugia has special music that can only be heard during this one battle. You can capture Lugia without a Master Ball.

If you capture Lugia and then lose to Greevil, you will still have Lugia available to you.

You can defeat Lugia instead of capturing him. If you do so, Greevil says "how dare you defeat my Lugia" instead of "how dare you snag my Lugia." Defeating Shadow Lugia gets you 2499 XP. If you defeat Shadow Lugia he will no longer be in Greevil's service, although the game doesn't say anything about Shadow Lugia running away.

If you lose to Lugia, the next time you go to Greevil you will quickly face Shadow Lugia, without the long introductory animation.
