Cilan's Pansage (Japanese: デントのヤナップ Dent's Yanappu) is the first Pokémon Cilan was known to have. He first appeared in Triple Leaders, Team Threats!.

History

Cilan and Pansage

Pansage is Cilan's first Pokémon; he made his first appearance in Triple Leaders, Team Threats! where he showed it to Ash who scanned him on his Pokédex before battling.

Pansage was the third and final Pokémon Ash faced in his Gym battle, where he went up against Ash's Oshawott. However, Pansage dodged all of his attacks with ease and hit Oshawott quite hard with Bullet Seed and Bite. After Oshawott finally hit a midair Pansage with Water Gun, Pansage started charging SolarBeam, which petrified Oshawott with fear. He appeared again in Dreams by the Yard Full! where he was defeated by Oshawott, earning Ash his first badge in the Unova region. At the end of the episode, Cilan takes Pansage with him while he travels with Ash and Iris.

In The Bloom Is on Axew!, Cilan used Pansage in a battle against Iris's Axew to help Axew gain some battle experience. Even though Pansage significantly lowered his own attack power, Axew was thrown off by his attacks. The battle ended when Axew used Dragon Rage which caused an explosion that took Pansage, as well as everyone else, by surprise.

In A Home for Dwebble!, Pansage was used to help track down a group of Dwebble by using Dig. He was injured by the one Dwebble that it was trying to help. Dwebble apologized and a friendship was formed. He later fell ill because of the injury and was given an herbal remedy made by Iris. In the morning, after Pansage recovered, he assisted Dwebble in getting its rock back. Pansage was very happy when Dwebble decided to travel with Cilan and himself, so that their friendship can continue.

Pansage battled against Cabernet, another Pokémon Connoisseur and rival of Cilan's in BW019. Cilan chose him to battle her Sawsbuck, which it defeated after confusing it with Dig and hitting it with strong Bullet Seed and SolarBeam attacks, not taking a single hit in the process.

Personality

Much like his Trainer, Pansage is kind and cheerful to others. He is patient and gentle when battling the severely disadvantaged Axew in The Bloom Is on Axew! as well as on the wild Venipede in BW022. He is also shown to be very forgiving in A Home For Dwebble as he held no grudge against Dwebble despite being injured by it and eventually made ill. But he can also be very competitive as seen in BW019 when he battles against Cabernet's Sawsbuck, as well as quick tempered as seen in BW028 when he is suddenly attacked while taking a nap and knocks out Minccino without being given orders.
