The Rage glitch is a glitch in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver. If a Pokémon uses Rage, then subsequently changes to a different move, it removes all volatile status conditions from that Pokémon, except Rage.

Most significantly, this causes a transformed Pokémon to no longer be considered transformed. If this happens, the Pokémon retains its transformed moveset after battle.

Reason: Full list of affected status conditions

In the Generation IV games, using the move Rage gives the Pokémon a volatile status condition that causes its Rage to build whenever it is hit by an attack. If the Pokémon uses a move other than Rage, it is supposed to lose the Rage status; however, due to an oversight, the Pokémon instead loses every volatile status except Rage.

This affects the following volatile statuses:

Transform

Removing Transform in particular has significant implications, as it allows the transformed Pokémon keep its transformed moveset permanently after the end of the battle.

The glitch allows any Pokémon capable of learning Transform, Mimic, Copycat, Assist or Metronome to learn any move (other than Chatter or Struggle) due to the possible incorporation of Smeargle. Performing this glitch allows Ditto to earn Super Contest Ribbons.

One application of this is to teach Ditto another Pokémon's Egg Moves, then breed it with a female Pokémon to pass down the Egg Moves to the hatched Pokémon.

Performing the glitch

Basic

The glitch occurs after a Pokémon uses Transform, then uses the move Rage while transformed until the "Rage is building" message is shown. Afterward, either the opponent must be caught, or the enemy Pokémon must be defeated by a move other than Rage. If the Pokémon trying to change its moves faints or switches out before the battle ends, the glitch will not work.

After the "Rage is building" message is displayed, the Pokémon that will change its moves must defeat the enemy. Additionally, the opponent cannot be defeated with Rage.
