Trivia
- Lickitung was originally to be called Tonguetyd but this changed before the release of the English versions of Pokémon Red and Blue.
- Ironically, even though it was repeatedly stated to attack using licks, it was not able to learn Lick until Generation II.
- Prior to Generation IV, Lickitung can learn Rollout by TM04 during Generation II, or when purified in Pokémon XD or tutored the move in Pokémon Emerald. Despite this, it cannot evolve into Lickilicky in those generations because Lickilicky did not yet exist. This makes it and Piloswine the only Pokémon which could not evolve even if the criteria were met because their evolved forms were not yet created.
Origin
It may have been based on any number of lizards with extending tongues, in particular the fat-tailed gecko.
Name origin
Lickitung's name is a combination and corruption of lick and tongue. The bero in Beroringa may be from ベロ, tongue, or べろべろなめる berobero nameru, to lick up with one's tongue. Ringer is most likely derived from English ring, referring to the patterns on its body.
In other languages
- German: Schlurp - This name comes from the word slurp.
- French: Excelangue - Excellent means excellent, and langue means tongue. The word as a whole sounds like excellent.
- Korean: 내루미 Naerumi
