Useful article?

Ummm... isn't the Pikachu you get in Yellow pretty much as variant as any other starter? If we have an article on Red's Pikachu, what's to say we shouldn't on Red's/Leaf's/Blue's Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur (and I mean the game ones), Gold's/Silver's/Kris's Typhlosion, Feraligatr, and Meganium, and so on? Heck, for those, the articles would need to be separate for the player characters' Pokémon, because while most do evolve their starter all the way, you can still choose not to. I move for a redirection to Starter Pokémon. TTEchidna 23:53, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I didn't see much of a point for the creation of this article either (even if I did clean it up a bit). So, if you want to make it a redirect to Starter Pokémon, I have no objections. --Obake 01:41, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
This one is the starter you can write the most about so the question is whether that is notable enough, not whether the other starters should get articles. --FabuVinny T-C-S 11:12, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

wouldn't it be better if this was made for the manga? - unsigned comment from Sonicflames (talkcontribs)

Special

Red's team in GSC is based on Pokemon obtainable in Yellow. It is not based on Pokemon Special.

  • Pikachu - Starter
  • Charizard - Obtained from Damien
  • Blastoise - Obtained from Jenny
  • Venusaur - Obtained from Melanie
  • Snorlax - Caught with Poke Flute
  • Espeon - Found in Celadon Mansion

Other Pikachu

If you trade another Pikachu from Red/Blue to Yellow, will it behave the same to the starter Pikachu? Will it accept a thunderstone? PokemonTrainer7738 17:31, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

It will not act like the starter Pikachu. It will accept a Thunderstone. IIMarckus 01:20, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Heart Gold Soul Silver

In the trivia section it says "This has been changed so that the first Pokémon in the player's party will follow him or her." Has this been confirmed yet? - unsigned comment from Jats605 (talkcontribs)

Pikachu emotions

I only did this once, so someone might have to check it before they put it in, but, I think if you let Pikachu be put to sleep by Jigglypuff (In Pewter City) And then either walk out of sight or leave it there for a while (I don't know which) Pikachu will shock you if you talk to him (similar to if he knows Thunder Bolt, or Thunder) for a while, then will cool down and if you talk to him a poison symbol will appear above his head (I believe it means "Die") and he will look away. I'm at Cerulean Cave (entrance) and he still hates me, but if he changes I'll post it here. PichuMaster 16:28, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Sometimes instead of the "Die" thing, he'll just turn away and blink a few times, but it's rare. PichuMaster 16:37, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Don't worry. After a few (about 500) steps he'll go back to normal. He did with me... SpecialK Leiks Lucario and The Celebi Glitch 17:48, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Merge?

Could we merge the following pages? Pika, Red's Pikachu (Pocket Monsters), Red's Pikachu (game), Chuchu? I could even see it possible to merge with Ash's Pikachu, but that's a stretch. Jdrawer (talk) 01:57, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Article image

How exactly does the Pikachu from Jou's Big Adventure represent the games version of Red's Pikachu? I highly doubt that manga is canon to the games. That's like putting Satoshi's Pikachu as the main image. Fang-tan (talk)

Stadium

According to this archive of Nintendo of Norway, Pikachu from Pokémon Yellow uses the special voice from Yellow as its cry rather than a generic Pikachu cry. Currently, this page only says Pikachu from Yellow do this in Stadium 2. --SnorlaxMonster 15:04, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

All right...

Why does this article seem to assume by default that the Pikachu used by Red in the games where he's an NPC is the one he received as a starter in Yellow? It could just as well be a Pikachu he caught himself. Especially considering that one of those games (HGSS) is a sequel to FRLG, where it's impossible to get Pikachu as a starter. Other games like BW2 used the FRLG/HGSS designs for Red and others, implying that they treat the remakes as the canon versions, as opposed to Yellow. And there is LGPE where Red has Pikachu yet it's implied that his starter was Bulbasaur (just like Blue and Green's starters were implied to be Charmander and Squirtle respectively). There is also the fact that none of the official adaptations that featured Red as the main character made Pikachu his starter -- they all had him catch it. Golden Trainer (talk) 06:37, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

How about rewriting the opening into something like this:
"Red's Pikachu (Japanese: レッドのピカチュウ Red's Pikachu) is one of Red's signature Pokémon. In Pokémon Yellow, he's the sole starter Pokémon, being based on Ash's Pikachu from the Pokémon anime. In other games, it's possible for Red to catch Pikachu in the wild instead. As of HeartGold and SoulSilver, he is the highest-leveled Trainer-owned Pokémon in the main series games."
I feel this covers all bases. Anyone opposed? Golden Trainer (talk) 13:45, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
It's not necessary. That would be conflating Red with the player character, which Red is not. Kai * the Arc Toraph 00:55, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
I mean, the article is already conflating Yellow!Pikachu with Red's Pikachu from other games, even in instances where Yellow is treated as non-canon (particularly in the "As an opponent" section). It's literally about all instances of a Pikachu owned by Red (even including pre-Yellow Sugimori art of Red with Pikachu), not just Yellow!Pikachu. Golden Trainer (talk) 07:16, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

About this, ‘’Pokémon Masters EX’’ explicitly indicates that Mt. Silver’s Pikachu was caught in Viridian Forest, which would also explain why he stays in Poké Balls while still being high leveled. While of course Pokémon Masters has its own continuity, it further supports the notion that the Pikachu fought in Mt. Silver might not necessarily be Red’s starter Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow, which is already suggested by him staying in Poké Balls.—Mister Wu (talk) 08:15, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Move

This page is currently named "Red's Pikachu (game)". I agree with the existing request to drop the "(game)" part and rename the page to "Red's Pikachu".

This page is mostly about Red's Pikachu from the games, but it also serves as a hub for other versions of Red's Pikachu as well. For instance, the page image at the top is from the Pokémon Generations anime. Technically the page name "Red's Pikachu (games, anime, manga, and TCG)" would be more accurate than the current "Red's Pikachu (game)". But the best name appears to be simply "Red's Pikachu".

For comparison, the Ash's Pikachu page is mostly about the anime but it serves as the hub for a bunch of game and manga appearances as well. I know that "Red's Pikachu (game)" probably has "(game)" in the title because this Pikachu originated in the games (notwithstanding the fact that it originated as an adaptation of the anime). But anyway, the "Ash's Pikachu" page is not named "Ash's Pikachu (anime)". --Daniel Carrero (talk) 02:22, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Just noting that Red's Pikachu is currently a disambig. Landfish7 10:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Okay, I see that is correct. In that case, I suggest moving "Red's Pikachu (game)" to "Red's Pikachu", and also the disambiguation page "Red's Pikachu" to "Red's Pikachu (disambiguation)". --Daniel Carrero (talk) 22:17, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
As this page is the primary topic and spans the games, anime, manga, and TCG, I've moved it so that this page takes the main title. Landfish7 22:31, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Nice, thank you. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 05:35, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Split

As it stands this article seems to be covering two separate characters/topics: Red's Pikachu, and the partner Pikachu from Pokémon Yellow. As it cannot be presumed that Red's Pikachu and the partner Pikachu are always the same Pikachu, and due to the distinct scope of these two topics, this article should be split into two articles, one about Red's Pikachu and its appearances in various media, and the other about the partner Pikachu and its mechanics in Pokémon Yellow and related side series games, in order to give both topics their own focus. To this end, I have drafted out what this split could look like for Red's Pikachu and the partner Pikachu. Please feel free to share your thoughts on the split or the drafts below. Landfish7 10:53, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea.
Any reason the other article shouldn't be titled "Yellow's Pikachu", though? (To me, it looks like the leading sentence should've been split between the articles, too.) Nescientist (talk) 17:17, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
Splitting the articles sounds like a good idea. Thanks for creating the drafts.
In GSC/HGSS and later games, Red appears as an NPC with Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, and Pikachu. It's not revealed which exactly was his starter. So it's possible that this Pikachu may or may not be the starter from Yellow. (Schrödinger's Pikachu?)
As for the article name, I suppose either of these could work: "Pikachu (Yellow)" or "Yellow's Pikachu".
The name "Yellow's Pikachu" would be because the player character is repeatedly said to be named Yellow according to the Japanese manual, but this name does not appear in the English manual, and this was before his definitive name "Red" was introduced.
I'm not sure about the name "Partner Pikachu". Yellow's game dialogue never refers to Pikachu as a "starter", "partner" or "first partner". --Daniel Carrero (talk) 18:11, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
In my opinion, it's good that the draft is currently named "Red's Pikachu" instead of "Red's Pikachu (game)".
That "Red's Pikachu" page is about Red in the games, anime, manga and TCG, so it appears to make sense not to include (game). We have "Ash's Pikachu" instead of "Ash's Pikachu (anime)". --Daniel Carrero (talk) 18:25, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
Support the split. I think that since the "Yellow's Pikachu" has not appeared in English language media, and the Pikachu has not been referred to as "Partner" or "Starter", the title "Pikachu (Yellow)" fits more. → PikaTepig999 18:36, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
I also support "Pikachu (Yellow)" since Yellow's Pikachu makes me think of Chuchu before the Pikachu from Pokemon Yellow. Minibug (talk) 18:46, 14 May 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I suppose "Yellow (Pikachu)" "Pikachu (Yellow)" is better than "Yellow's Pikachu".
It's a good point that "Yellow's Pikachu" appears to be about Chuchu.
It looks like Yellow (Pocket Monsters) has a Pikachu too. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 18:55, 14 May 2024 (UTC) - Edited to fix the "Pikachu (Yellow)" --Daniel Carrero (talk) 05:24, 18 May 2024 (UTC)
There were concerns that "Pikachu (Yellow)" could be slightly ambiguous with "Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition". Additionally, it needs to be clear that this is specifically the player's Pikachu that is given to them at the start of the game and not just any random Pikachu from the game. Landfish7 11:28, 17 May 2024 (UTC)
Maybe we can use either "Pikachu (Yellow)" or "Player's Pikachu (Yellow)". We have a page named Player's house.
In this game, there are no other Pikachu available to the player (outside of trades from other games).
It appears that the NPCs never use Pikachu on their teams either, but there's a Pikachu seen inside the house from the Pikachu's Beach minigame.
We can also consider how notable is the player's Pikachu. Even if we found some minor Pikachu somewhere, the player's Pikachu is very notable in this game. We have a page named Old man (Kanto) for a notable old man even though there are multiple old men in Kanto. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 12:02, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

(resetting indent)Daniel, I think you make a good argument, so I think Pikachu (Yellow) should be fine as the title. Landfish7 12:26, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

This split has been complete. Landfish7 10:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 22:15, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Return to "Red's Pikachu" page.
