Riley and his Lucario in the anime

Riley made his first appearance in the anime in DP110. He is voiced by Yū Mizushima in Japanese.

He was revealed to be a user of Aura. His Aura use seems to be somewhat advanced as he is able to created barrier shields. He and his Lucario were able to save Iron Island from being blown up when they trapped the explosion in an Aura barrier and sent it away from the island.

Lucario

In the games

He is one of five Trainers who can join with the main character during an event in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Later, he can join the player in competition at Sinnoh's Battle Tower. He first appears at Iron Island. He uses a Lucario and shares similarities with the character Sir Aaron. Riley will give the player a Riolu egg after finishing the event.

Apparently, Byron had previously asked Riley to become a Gym Leader, though Riley politely refused, saying that Byron's son Roark should be considered first.

Riley mentioned to the Team Galactic members that Iron Island actually belonged to him, suggesting he may be the owner of the mines and someone else reopened the island as a place for wild Pokémon to live as well as a place for people to train.

Quotes

First meeting in Iron Island
"...You are? OK, you're (player's name). I'm Riley. I'm a Trainer, yes, and it is a bit odd that I would be training here. If you'd like, we could team up. The wild Pokémon here are restless. I'll heal up your Pokémon if they get hurt."

In conversation
"Ha ha! I'd have to agree with you. People training here would be those with too much time on their hands."

"This used to be a fairly thriving ore mine once upon a time. I guess the steel ore's played out. There's only Pokèmon here now."

"Have you met Byron? The Leader of Canalave Gym? He's asked me to become a Gym Leader, but there's his son Roark to consider."

"Imagine what it would be like for a Steel-type Pokémon user to battle a Steel type. Would that be like battling yourself, I wonder? I mean, it's a lot harder to defeat one's self than anyone else."

"What's going on here, though? The native Pokémon are restless... I don't like this... Let's hurry."

Meeting the Team Galactic Grunts
"I get it now. You're responsible for agitating the Pokémon. I don't care what good reason you may have, but I don't want you bringing any trouble into my mine."
(After Grunts' reply)
"To share in all the joys and all the sorrows... This is how all the Trainers and Pokémon live in Sinnoh! I won't allow anyone to deny that code of ethics! Come on, (player)! This is one battle we cannot lose!"

After winning the battle
"Thanks. You really helped me out. Listen, I have a Pokémon Egg here. Would you take it with you?"
(Accept)
"Thanks! I'd like you to show the Pokémon that's inside the Egg all sorts of new places. Spending time with you was very enjoyable. I intend to test my skills in other places from now on. Let's meet again! Take care on the way out."

In the Pokémon Special Manga

Diamond meets Riley at Iron Island. Byron asks Riley to help Diamond sharpen his Pokémon battle skills, before Diamond goes to Lake Verity.

Pokémon

Riley owns these Pokémon:

Lucario

Trivia

  • Riley uses the most Pokémon of any of the people that one can team up with at the Battle Tower.
  • In the Battle Tower, Riley is the only one who uses the same Pokémon that he used when he was first encountered, his Lucario. Cheryl and Mira both use the final evolved forms of their Pokémon, which are Blissey and Alakazam, respectively. Buck and Marley don't even use their Pokémon from the first encounter in the Tower.
  • Judging by Riley's battle animation, he may possess the ability to use Aura; his hand lights up with a bluish glow. This was confirmed in his anime appearance.
  • The design of the necklace Riley wears is the same as the pattern on Sir Aaron's gloves. It's also the same as the pattern on Groudon's arm.
  • Riley bears a striking resemblance to Sir Aaron in the movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew as well as having a Lucario of his own. He can manipulate Aura as well.
