Generation I and III

In the Generation I and III games, the Dome Fossil is a Key Item.

In Pokémon Emerald, the Dome Fossil (as well as the Helix Fossil and Old Amber) is found in the game data, but it is not legitimately obtainable and has no effect. The player is unable to regenerate this fossil in the Devon Corporation.

Generation IV onward

From Generation IV onward, the Dome Fossil is no longer a Key Item, and is a normal item. Therefore, multiples of them can be obtained, they can be held, and sent to other players via trading.

The Dome Fossils in Shell Shock!
A Dome Fossil in A Night in the Nacrene City Museum!

Main series

Dome Fossils were first seen in Shell Shock!. They made up the structure of the island Fukuhara Island No. 4, and were revived into Kabuto in red moonlight, causing the whole island to collapse and sink.

A Dome Fossil made a cameo appearance in Ancient Family Matters! during a visual representation of Roark's love of Fossils in an argument with Byron.

In A Night in the Nacrene City Museum!, a Dome Fossil was first seen chasing Hawes, as he claimed it to be doing, but was later seen safely placed in a display case. Hawes later explained what it was to Ash and his friends. It was later revealed that the Yamask in the Nacrene City Museum was using its move Psychic to make the Dome Fossil float and chase after Hawes after he put its mask in a display case, thinking that it was a replica Yamask mask given to him as a gift from the company that made a Cofagrigus replica after purchasing it from them for the museum.

Pokémon Origins

A Dome Fossil in Pokémon Origins

A Dome Fossil briefly appeared in File 2: Cubone, where it was shown being hogged by a Super Nerd at Mt. Moon.

In the TCG

The first dedicated Dome Fossil card in the TCG
Main article: Dome Fossil (Majestic Dawn 89)

The Dome Fossil was introduced as a Trainer card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game in the Majestic Dawn expansion, first released in the Japanese Dawn Dash expansion. It is a Fossil Trainer card, so after being played it is put on the Bench as a Colorless-type Basic Pokémon. When the player attaches a Fighting Energy from their hand to the Dome Fossil, its Poké-Body allows them to search their deck for a Kabuto that evolves from a Dome Fossil and evolve Dome Fossil into the Kabuto. Afterwards, the player shuffles their deck.

Main article: Dome Fossil Kabuto (Fates Collide 96)

During the XY Series, the Fates Collide expansion included the Item card Dome Fossil Kabuto. It allows players to look at the bottom seven cards of their deck, reveal a Kabuto they find there, and put it onto their Bench. The other six cards are then shuffled back into the deck.

Main article: Antique Dome Fossil (151 152)

The Scarlet & Violet Series saw the release of Antique Dome Fossil in the 151 expansion. This card is similar to the original Dome Fossil, being another Fossil Trainer card. It has an Ability that makes it take 30 less damage from attacks.

Dome Fossils are also featured on the Mysterious Fossil card, which is a Fossil Trainer card that can evolve into Kabuto. Unidentified Fossil does not feature a Dome Fossil, but can also be used to evolve into Kabuto. Buried Fossil, on the other hand, is a full blooded Pokémon card that has what appears to be a fossilized Kabuto in the artwork. It evolves in the same way Mysterious Fossil does.
