Skuntank (Japanese: スカタンク Skutank) is a dual-type Poison/Dark Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It evolves from Stunky starting at level 34.

Biology

Skuntank is a medium-sized mammalian Pokémon that resembles a skunk with the face of a cat. It has purple, spiky fur with several tan stripes. The whiskers present on its pre-evolution have since vanished or have been replaced by furry purple tufts on the sides of Skuntank's face. Its legs are tan, and the tan coloration of its underside now forms a spiky pattern. Its nose is larger than its pre-evolution. Its massive tail with a cream colored stripe, sits on top of its back and head.

Skuntank is known for its noxious fluid which smells dreadful. It can spray this fluid over 160 feet (50 meters), and the longer it allows the liquid to ferment within its belly, the more powerful the smell. Unlike its pre-evolution and real-life skunks, which sprays fluids from their rears, Skuntank sprays its fluid from its tail tip, which can open. The stench of Skuntank's fluid varies depending on its diet. Skuntank prefers to nest in large, prickly bushes in heavily wooded areas and digs holes in the ground to make its nest. While Skuntank can use its poisonous fluids to take down prey, ironically it cannot handle the smell of its own stench, abandoning potential defeated meals as a result.

Evolution

Skuntank evolves from Stunky.

In The Needs of the Three!, Jupiter prepared to attack Ash and his friends with it before Cyrus stopped them, and in The Battle Finale of Legend!, it was defeated by Cynthia's Garchomp.

In Classroom Training!, Jeremiah owns a Skuntank. In Sliding Into Seventh!, it used its Stench Ability to force Team Rocket out of a shed where they had hidden themselves.

In A Little Rocket R & R!, a Team Rocket Grunt's Skuntank attacked the Resort Area. It reappeared in Nightfall? Nightmares! and A Midsummer Night's Light!.

An Alternate World Team Rocket Grunt's Skuntank appeared in Showdown at the Gates of Warp!.

Minor appearances

In Last Call — First Round!, a Coordinator's Skuntank and Toxicroak competed in a Double Performance in the Sinnoh Grand Festival.

Pokédex entries

Episode Pokémon Source Entry
DP126 Skuntank Ash's Pokédex Skuntank, the Skunk Pokémon and the evolved form of Stunky. It sprays a horrible-smelling liquid from the tip of its tail.

Pokémon Evolutions

A Skuntank appeared in flashbacks in The Rival under the ownership of Jupiter. She first used it in a battle against Barry and his Prinplup at Lake Acuity when she was attempting to capture Uxie and won thanks to its Smokescreen. Later, the two had a rematch at the Spear Pillar where Barry's fully evolved Empoleon put up a much stronger fight and defeated Skuntank.

In the manga

Darkrai Mission Story: Pokémon Ranger Vatonage - the Comic

A Skuntank appeared in Mission Complete as one of the Pokémon Kincaid controlled.

Phantom Thief Pokémon 7

A Skuntank appeared in P7-14, under the ownership of Yazawa.

Pokémon Adventures

In Stunning Staravia & Stinky Skuntank I, Team Galactic Grunts used an army of Skuntank and Staravia to battle Paka and Uji in Veilstone City so that they could find their client, Platinum, and use her for a ransom. They were defeated by the combined efforts of Paka, Uji, Diamond, and Pearl.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!

Like in the games and anime, Jupiter has a Skuntank, but it was only seen after being defeated by Mitsumi in The Battle Rages On.

Trivia

Origin

Skuntank is based on a hog-nosed skunk and a tank. Its appearance and notoriety of being incredibly foul-smelling is a trait also similar to the honey badger. Its stylized tail bears similarity to a pompadour, a hairstyle that is commonly associated with Japanese delinquents. It also bears similarities to cats. Its face resembles the form of buttocks, both on its front and below. Its learning Self-Destruct, Explosion as well as its ability Aftermath is likely derived from gas bombs, flatulence or skunks releasing all of their spray at once if hit by moving cars. Its name, the ability to learn the move Flamethrower naturally, and the way it shoots up projectiles from the tip of its tail in front of its body may be derived from tanks and expands on warfare theme from Stunky's gas bombs.

Name origin

Skuntank and Skutank may be a combination of skunk, stank (past tense of stink), and tank.
