In the anime

A Cloyster in the anime.

Misty battled against a Cloyster in The Bridge Bike Gang. Interestingly, its pre-evolution, Shellder, also made its debut in this episode, even though these two were not related or knew each other in any way.

Ash also battled one during the Indigo League in Fire and Ice.

Mateo owned a Cloyster in The Crystal Onix.

Prima used a Cloyster against Ash in The Mandarin Island Miss Match.

Butch used a Cloyster during his and Cassidy's attempt to capture Moltres in The Search for the Legend

In the manga

Cloyster's most predominant appearance is under Lorelei, during the Elite Four saga of Pokémon Special. It kept the voodoo dolls of Blue and Sabrina safely out of reach while Lorelei battled them.

Cloyster reappeared again in Lorelei's attempt to defend Seven Island. It is then remarked that Cloyster is the strongest fighter Lorelei has in her arsenal.

  • During Cloyster's Red/Blue sprites, the shell opens up and down, unlike its later sprites which have the shell going left to right.
  • Cloyster's core looks similar to Gastly.

Origin

It appears to be based off of a bivalve with a black pearl as its head.

Name origin

Cloyster's name may be a combination of cloister, to seclude or shelter oneself, and oyster. It could also be a combination of clam and oyster. Its Japanese name may be a combination of パール pearl and シェル shell.

In other languages

  • German: Austos
  • French: Crustabri - Crustacé means crustacean, and abri means shelter.
  • Korean: 파르셀 Pareusel
