Blastoise (Japanese: カメックス Kamex) is a Water-type Pokémon.
It evolves from Wartortle starting at level 36. It is the final form of Squirtle.
Blastoise is the version mascot of Pokémon Blue, appearing on the boxart.
Biology
Physiology
Blastoise is a large, tailed bipedal, blue tortoise-like Pokémon with a tough brown shell and two powerful water cannons, which are steel-like in appearance, that jut out of the top sides of its shell. The cannons can be withdrawn inside the shell, or rotated to point backwards; this enables Blastoise to commence jet assisted rams. Blastoise’s head sports triangular ears and is strong and sturdy in shape, allowing it to ram into foes in battle. Blastoise’s arms are thick and patterned with striations, possessing three claws on the hands. The white rim of the shell also encircles the arm. Unlike Wartortle and Squirtle, Blastoise’s tail is blue and stubby.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Blastoise can shoot water from its cannons with enough force to punch holes in steel, and enough accuracy to hit an empty can about 160 feet away. Blastoise also has the ability to learn Ice-type moves like Ice Beam and Blizzard. Since Blastoise is a fully evolved Water-type starter Pokémon, it can use Hyper Beam, Giga Impact and Hydro Cannon. It can spin very fast in its shell to knock enemies out of its path. Despite not having Steel as its secondary type, it does however gain access to Steel-type moves such as Gyro Ball, and Flash Cannon, which help it in battles against types that resist its Water-type moves.
Behavior
Despite their size, Blastoise are very gentle and calm Pokémon. They may be wary at first but can be very good allies in battle. They mainly take the role of leaders in large groups of Squirtle or Wartortle. They firmly plant their feet on the ground before shooting water from the jets on their back, deliberately making themselves heavy to withstand the recoil of their water jets. According to The Complete Pokémon Pocket Guide, it uses its heavy body as a crushing weight.
Habitat
Blastoise can be found living on island beaches near the ocean, but their preferred habitat seems to be freshwater ponds and lakes. This Pokémon is most likely to be found in Kanto.

Trivia
- Blastoise, like Ho-Oh (as of the release of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver), Dialga, and Palkia, shares the first letter of its name with the game it is the mascot of: Blue.
- Blastoise shares the same species name with Kabuto and Kabutops. They are all known as the Shellfish Pokémon.
- However, despite both of Blastoise's pre-evolutions being turtles, Blastoise is erroneously stated to be a shellfish.
- Blastoise has the highest base Special Defense of all fully evolved starter Pokémon.
- In Pokémon Stadium 2, there is a Trainer in the eighth battle of Poké Cup Ultra Ball R-2 who has a Blastoise with both Haze and Mirror Coat. However, it is impossible to breed both of these moves on the same Blastoise until Generation III.
- Blastoise is the only fully evolved form of a Kanto starter Pokémon that does not have a secondary type.
- Blastoise is the only fully evolved Kanto starter Pokémon not immune to Toxic Spikes. Venusaur is half Poison-type and Charizard is a half Flying-type.
Origin
Its design appears to be a mix of a sea turtle and a tortoise, further mixed with aspects of a tank. Blastoise's cannons may have been derived from the functioning tubes found in mussels and some other shellfish, thus its species name.
Name origin
Blastoise's name is a combination of blast (referring to its cannons) and tortoise. It may also derive from Blastoid (an extinct type of stemmed echinoderm with small hickory nut shaped fossils).
Kamex comes from the Japanese word 亀 kame (tortoise/turtle) and possibly マックス max (maximum).
