Dive (Japanese: ダイビング Diving) is a damage-dealing Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation III. The HM containing the move is given to the player by Steven Stone in Mossdeep City.

Dive cannot be used outside of battle without the Mossdeep City Gym badge in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald; the only games in which it is available as an HM.

Effect

In battle

Generation III

On the first turn, the user will dive down for one turn to become invulnerable to any attack with the exception of Surf and Whirlpool, which have doubled power, and Low Kick, which will cause regular damage. The user may also be hit underwater if it was previously targeted by Lock-On or Mind Reader, then struck the following turn. Sandstorm, Hail, and Shadow Sky will not cause damage during the semi-invulnerable turn.

Dive's base power is 60.

Generation IV

Dive's base power was raised to 80. All other effects are the same.

Due to the lack of diving areas in Sinnoh, this move has been relieved of its HM status.

Outside of battle

Allows players to go underwater in specific spots when they are Surfing. The only region these spots (and the HM itself) have been found so far is in Hoenn.

In the Anime

Floatzel Floatzel and its trainer dives underwater.

Trivia

  • The only non-Water type Pokémon that can learn Dive are legendaries and Dragonite.
  • Since Dive has only been used in the anime when there have been convenient lakes or pools of water, it is unknown how the Pokémon can dive underwater when there is no water around.
  • Because Dive was not included as an HM in Generation IV, few Pokémon learn it in Diamond and Pearl Versions, because migrated Pokémon cannot be transferred to Generation IV whilst knowing an HM. Therefore, Dive can only be obtained by leveling up certain Pokémon. This changed in Platinum when a move tutor capable of teaching certain Pokémon Dive was included.
  • Although the HM itself is not obtainable in FireRed and LeafGreen, cheating can make the HM accessible. In addition, it functions normally, being able to actually teach the move Dive.
