Porygon is the first artificial Pokémon that was ever created. It was created by Pokémon Lab according to a Pokémon Report found in Silph Co.. Porygon has a pink polygonal body with a blue stomach, blue triangular prism feet and a blue rectangular prism tail. Porygon has a pink, polygonal head that ends in a blue beak and has hexagon eyes. It does not breathe. Porygon is made completely out of programming code. Built into this code is a Silph copyright protection preventing duplication through electronic means.
Porygon is an artificial Pokémon made completely out of programming code. It has a pink, polyhedral head that ends in a blue beak and has hexagonal eyes, and it has a pink polyhedral body with a blue front, blue triangular prism feet, and a blue rectangular prism tail. In 3D games, such as Pokémon Stadium, it can open its beak and can detach its limbs and head from its torso. According to its Pokédex entries, it has copy protection built into its code, preventing duplication through electronic means. It was created in 1995 by Silph Co., but documents at Silph Co. claim it was created at the Pokémon Lab on Cinnabar Island using the state-of-the-art technology of its time. Because it was created decades ago, many of its parts have since become obsolete. It was the first artificial Pokémon to have ever been created through computer programming. In ancient Hisui, people were confused about Porygon and its evolutions due to them arriving through space-time distortions and being the product of far more advanced technology than what was available at the time.
Gender differences
Porygon is a genderless species.

Special abilities
Due to its man-made origins, Porygon does not need to breathe or eat, though it can still accept food if given. It has the ability to convert its body into digital data, allowing it to travel through cyberspace. Recently, it has become more helpful inside cyberspace by searching for any suspicious data that exists. Some believed Porygon has the power to potentially travel in space despite the species not displaying that ability yet. Because it is man-made, it is generally found in computers or in labs and other List of Pokémon by habitat where people work.
In Generation I, Porygon's move, Conversion, alters its own type to its opponent's type. <!--This was changed for Generation II, where Conversion now changed the user's type to that of one of the user's other moves.-->

Porygon is capable of using various Ice and Electrical attacks, along with a few Psychic abilities, the rare ability to wield Tri Attack and the one-of-a-kind ability to use Sharpen.
Porygon and its evolved forms are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the moves Conversion and Conversion 2. Prior to Generation V, Sharpen was also one of its signature moves. Additionally, prior to Generation V, Porygon and its evolved forms are the only known Pokémon that could have Download as an Ability. It can use Conversion to change its appearance to mimic another Pokémon's and has also demonstrated the ability to change color for camouflage.
left clear

Even though Porygon is an unevolved and non-legendary Pokémon, it can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.
Evolution
Porygon evolves into Porygon2, which evolves into Porygon-Z.

Porygon, and its evolved forms, Porygon2, and Porygon-Z, are the only known Pokémon that learn Conversion and Conversion 2. Porygon is also the only known Pokémon that learns Sharpen.
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

* Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky: In the Future of Darkness, Porygon live past Spacial Cliffs. Dusknoir goes to Spacial Cliffs to see them. Two Porygon appear at the end of the dungeon. They are allies of Primal Dialga, and they transmit Grovyle and Dusknoir to Frozen Island.
Porygon, because they're man-made, are generally found in computers or in labs and other buildings working with people, which makes it almost uncatchable. However, Porygon are found wild in Sinnoh's Trophy Garden.

Major appearances
Porygon's only major anime appearance was in EP038. Dr. Akihabara created two specimens, List of Pokémon temporarily owned by the Team Rocket trio of which was stolen by TRT, while the other one was borrowed by Ash and ashfr. Both remained with Dr. Akihabara at the end of the episode.

This episode caused more than 600 children in Japan to be transferred to hospitals by ambulance because of seizure-like symptoms they reported, due to a flashing strobe effect present at several points of the episode, and was therefore banned and never aired again anywhere in the world. Since then, Porygon and its evolved forms, Porygon2 and Porygon-Z, have never played a main role in the anime.

Minor appearances
Porygon made its English dub debut in a scene transition in A Chansey Operation. A similar transition appears in Lights, Camera, Quack-tion.

Base stats
Porygon appeared in the Who's That Pokémon? segment for the English dub of A Way Off Day Off, and was featured with an English voice, making this the only time Porygon appeared with such a voice in the anime.

Type effectiveness
In the opening sequence of both Celebi: The Voice of the Forest and Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias (the former only in the case of the dub, since said intro sequence was originally made for the latter), an unhappy Porygon can be seen floating behind a wire fence in a city.

The numbers written above are correct if Porygon hasn't changed its type using Conversion or Conversion 2.
Porygon made a cameo appearance in the "World of Pokémon" opening of Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice, which featured every Pokémon from the first five generations revealed to that point.

Evolution
Porygon's only appearance in Melee is that of a Poké Float. When the fighting is on Slowpoke's tail, three will travel across the top of the screen. However, they move too quickly to land on and so are little more than decoration in practice.

Trivia
Trivia
* Porygon is the only Pokémon that evolves by trade twice: Once holding the Up-Grade into Porygon2, and a second time (as Porygon2) into Porygon-Z when holding a Dubious Disc.
* Porygon is the only Pokémon that evolves by trade twice: once holding the Upgrade into Porygon2, and a second time (as Porygon2) into Porygon-Z when holding a Dubious Disc. It is also the only Pokémon in a three-stage evolutionary line that does not require leveling up to trigger any of its evolutions (i.e. it is possible to acquire a Porygon-Z at level 1).
* Electric Soldier Porygon, which featured Porygon, caused seizures and irritated eyes. It was not Porygon itself, but Pikachu's Thunderbolt which caused the problematic blue and red flash - even so, neither Porygon nor its evolutions have been seen in the anime since, except for the intro to one of the movies.
* Porygon's evolutionary line is the only three-stage evolutionary line whose members were all considered fully evolved during their respective debut generations.
* Porygon is the only Pokémon who evolves into a smaller Pokémon, then evolves into a larger Pokémon
* Porygon is the only Pokémon to have its category changed in Japanese. Its category in Red and Green is シージーポケモン CG Pokémon, which was changed to バーチャルポケモン Virtual Pokémon from Pokémon Blue Version onwards.
* Despite being "copy protected" by Silph Co., Porygon can be cloned.
*According to the Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia, Porygon was developed in the year 1995.
* Porygon's evolutionary line is the only three-stage evolutionary line whose members can all learn both Giga Impact and Hyper Beam. This means that these Pokémon are also the only ones which can have both Giga Impact and Hyper Beam at level 1.
* Porygon have three signature moves, along with Vespiquen the most out of all Pokémon.
*Porygon is one of five Pokémon that initially did not evolve into or from another Pokémon, but is now part of a three-stage evolutionary line (the other four being Chansey, Magmar, Electabuzz, and Roselia). However, unlike the others, Porygon got two evolutions, while the others got a pre-evolution and a new evolution.
*Porygon and its evolutions are the only Pokémon that do not have some relation to the number three (besides the number of members in their evolutionary family) to learn Tri Attack.
*There is evidence lending to the idea that Porygon may have been created by Team Rocket. In Generation I, Porygon is only obtainable through a Team Rocket-run establishment. Not to mention, Porygon was developed in Pokémon Lab, which presumably has some connection to the Pokémon Mansion, where Mewtwo was supposedly created in the games. And in the anime, Team Rocket was responsible for the creation of Mewtwo. Also, the only in-game trainers that use Porygon are in league with Team Rocket (Scientist Gideon in FR/LG and Scientist Rich in the Radio Tower in GSC).
*Only in Generation II, it is possible for Porygon to have both effects of the move Curse. One is by simply using it to the non-Ghost effect of Curse. The other is by using either Conversion or Conversion 2 to change it's type to Ghost and have the Ghost effect of Curse. The other Pokémon that can do this is Porygon2.

Origin
Origin
It appears to be based on the concept of an origami crane made with primitive 3D graphics software.
Porygon seems to be based on a bird or Orizuru that has been rendering (computer graphics) using digital software. The head-tipping motion it displays in some games is reminiscent of a drinking bird toy. The flat shapes comprising its body are similar to the polygon mesh used to create 3D computer graphics. Its Pokédex entries imply a connection to artificial intelligence and robotic spacecraft.

In a 1997 interview with the magazine Famimaga 64, Satoshi Tajiri stated that Porygon was created out of irony. According to him, during the development of Red and Green, people kept telling him that he was too late on making a game for the Game Boy, and that he should start making games with 3D polygonal graphics for next generation consoles. As a result, he included Porygon, a Pokémon made out of polygons, in the sprite-based Pokémon Red and Green, hence the irony.

Name origin
Name origin
Porygon's name is a mix between polygon and origami. It may also reflect the stereotype that Japanese people pronounce their 'L' sounds as 'R' sounds, Porygon being a mispronunciation of polygon.
Porygon is a corruption of polygon.

Porygon (Japanese: ポリゴン Porygon) is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Porygon2 when traded while holding an Upgrade, which evolves into Porygon-Z when traded while holding a Dubious Disc.

(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for more details.)

Biology

Porygon changing its appearance using Conversion

Porygon is an artificial Pokémon made completely out of programming code. It has a pink, polyhedral head that ends in a blue beak and has hexagonal eyes, and it has a pink polyhedral body with a blue front, blue triangular prism feet, and a blue rectangular prism tail. In 3D games, such as Pokémon Stadium, it can open its beak and can detach its limbs and head from its torso. According to its Pokédex entries, it has copy protection built into its code, preventing duplication through electronic means. It was created in 1995 by Silph Co.,[1] but documents at Silph Co. claim it was created at the Pokémon Lab on Cinnabar Island using the state-of-the-art technology of its time.

Because it is man-made, it is generally found in computers or in labs and other buildings where people work.

Evolution

Porygon evolves into Porygon2, which evolves into Porygon-Z.

Porygon in the anime

Major appearances

Porygon's only major anime appearance was in EP038. Dr. Akihabara created two specimens, one of which was stolen by Team Rocket, while the other one was borrowed by Ash and his friends.

Porygon appeared in the Who's That Pokémon? segment for the English dub of A Way Off Day Off, and was featured with an English voice, making this the only time Porygon appeared with such a voice in the anime.

In the opening sequence of both Celebi: The Voice of the Forest and Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias (the former only in the case of the dub, since said intro sequence was originally made for the latter), an unhappy Porygon can be seen floating behind a wire fence in a city.

In a shot in a "World of Pokémon" opening at the beginning of The Journey to be a Pokémon Master Begins!!, a Porygon was floating above a fence, similar to the aforementioned movies.

Porygon made a cameo appearance in the "World of Pokémon" opening of Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice, which featured every Pokémon from the first five generations revealed to that point.

A Porygon appeared as an image in Partner Promises!.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros./Melee

Porygon pops out of a door on top of the Silph Co. building in the Saffron City stage. It damages players that come into contact with it.

Porygon's only appearance in Melee is that of a Poké Float. When the fighting is on Slowpoke's tail, three will travel across the top of the screen. However, they move too quickly to land on and so are little more than decoration in practice.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Porygon retains its role as a stage element in the Saffron City stage, as well as appearing as a Spirit.

Trivia

 • Porygon is the only Pokémon that evolves by trade twice: once holding the Upgrade into Porygon2, and a second time (as Porygon2) into Porygon-Z when holding a Dubious Disc. It is also the only Pokémon in a three-stage evolutionary line that does not require leveling up to trigger any of its evolutions (i.e. it is possible to acquire a Porygon-Z at level 1).
 • Porygon's evolutionary line is the only three-stage evolutionary line whose members were all considered fully evolved during their respective debut generations.
 • Porygon is the only Pokémon to have its category changed in Japanese. Its category in Pokémon Red and Green is シージーポケモン CG Pokémon, which was changed to バーチャルポケモン Virtual Pokémon from Pokémon Blue onwards.
 • According to the Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia, Porygon was developed in the year 1995.

Origin

Porygon seems to be based on a bird or paper crane that has been rendered using digital software.

According to him, during the development of Pokémon Red and Green, people kept telling him that he was too late on making a game for the Game Boy, and that he should start making games with 3D polygonal graphics for next generation consoles. As a result, he included Porygon, a Pokémon made out of polygons, in the sprite-based Pokémon Red and Green, hence the irony.[2]

Name origin

Porygon is a corruption of polygon.
