The Exp. Share (Japanese, games: がくしゅうそうち; TCG: 学習装置; translation: Learning Equipment), known in English Generation I as the Exp.All, is a type of hold item introduced in Generation I.

Effect

Manual activation

The Exp. Share cannot be activated manually.

Held item

Total experience gained by defeating a Pokémon is split in half, with half evenly distributed between all Pokémon who participated in the battle and half evenly distributed between all Pokémon holding an Exp. Share. The holding Pokémon also gains all EVs (Stat Experience in Generation I and II that would be gained by defeating the opponent. As items could not be held by Pokémon in Generation I, it works as a key item in the main series games and as a regular item in Pokémon Stadium. It also has a different effect in the Generation I games.

If a Pokémon both participates in battle and holds an Exp. Share, it gains all the experience at once. However, in Generation II, if a Pokémon with the same original Trainer as the player both participates and battle and holds an Exp. Share, that Pokémon will gain approximately half (due to rounding) of the experience twice, meaning that it doesn't receive 100% of the experience.

Passive effect

In Generation I, where the English name of the item is Exp.All, if it is in the Bag, any experience earned from a battle is evenly distributed among all party members, who do not receive Stat Experience unless they participate in the battle.
