Erika (Japanese: エリカ) is the Gym Leader of Celadon City. Shee hands out the Rainbow Badge to trainers who defeat her. She is a serene young girl who specializes in Grass-type Pokémon.

In all versions and adaptations of Pokémon, Erika's Gym is consistently rendered as a green house.


In the Anime

Erika ran a cosmetics store in Celadon City where she sold a special brand of perfume made from the essence of her favorite Pokémon, Gloom. Misty, Brock, and Pikachuwere enamoured with the scents, but Ash insulted the perfume.

Erika had him banned from both her cosmetics store and the Celadon Gym.

Ash later snuck into the Gym with the help of Jesse and James. Dressed in woman's clothing, Ash signed up as a student at the Gym.

Erika was reading a fairy-tale to some Grass-type Pokémon when Pikachu instantly recognized Ash and exposed him.

Erika finally agreed to a battle for the Gym Badge. However, their match was interupted when Team Rocket started a fire in the Gym. Ash risked his life to run in and rescue Erika's Gloom.

Out of thanks, Erika awarded Ash with the Rainbow Badge.

In the Games

Erika's title is "The Nature-Loving Princess".

She is a student of flower-arranging, so her favorite Pokémon are a Grass-types. She is a quiet girl, but she's well-known within her home town.

A bit shallow, Erika only collects Pokémon she considers attractive. Finally, Erika tends to doze off quite a bit.

In addition to the Rainbow Badge, Erika gives out TM 21 Mega Drain in Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Green, and Pokémon Yellow. In Pokémon FireRed, and Pokémon LeafGreen, he gives out TM 19 Giga Drain.

In Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver, and Pokémon Crystal, she doesn't give out a TM.

In the Pokémon Special Manga

In the Pokémon Special manga, Erika is a dashing young woman who gives lectures at universities and practices archery.

She sent Red out on a quest to capture an unusual Eevee that could evolve at will between it's three elemental forms.

Erika threatened to kill Eevee, however, it turned out that she was just testing Red's character.

Erika is allied with the "good" Gym Leaders of Kanto, and often assists Misty and Brock during crises.

Misc

In How I Became a Pokémon Card, Erika was childhood friends with Kaede, who had an unfortunate reaction to a flower wreath Erika gave her at a party and ran off in shame. They meet again later when Kaede, now a Rocket agent, invaded Erika's gym. Erika is overjoyed to see her old friend and seems to disregard any and all ill plots.
