The Pikachu Glitch (also known as Pikachu Off-Screen Glitch[1] or Pikawalk) refers to a glitch of the Generation I, in concrete, in Pokémon Yellow, in which the player walks around while Pikachu is off the screen and data is corrupted from D438 onward, with values based on the steps that the player made.

Description

The Pikachu Glitch it's a number of steps perfomed after the removal of Pikachu from the screen, causing glitches and other alterations. To provoke the desaparition of Pikachu from the screen, it's necessary cause an interaction which make Pikachu stay freeze, and move away until he doesn't appear in the screen. Some of these interactions can be, for example, when Pikachu fall asleep with the Jigglypuff's song in the Pewter city's center, when he is impressed in the house of Bill or fall in love with Clefairy in the Pokémon Fan Club in Vermilion City. Finally, when Pikachu is off the screen, the player has to walk around some steps to cause the glitch.

Effects

To know when the glitch is activating, some NPCs that should look at one direction and shouldn't turn around (like the nurse in the Pokémon Center), they will move randomly to all directions. Probably, if the player interacts with those NPCs, will cause a corruption, with a box text extremely long. There are sometimes when some specific NPCs show the 0 ERROR glitch.

There are all the effects known caused by this glitch:

Get 255:59 hours play time

With Pikachu off-screen, walk exactly 58 steps. As a curiosity, the highest hours without tricks are 255:00, so the player can pass that number with this glitch.

Cause a Super Glitch City

Walk 244 steps or so with Pikachu off-screen.

Alter Pikachu Happiness

When the player lost Pikachu in the [Glitch City], their happiness will change:

Set Pikachu's happiness (D46F) to a low value 01-05: Walk 56 steps with Pikachu off-screen.

Make Pikachu do the winking emote. (D49B=01): With Pikachu off-screen, step south after walking 99 steps, then talk to Pikachu.

Make Pikachu do the fishing emote (D49B=02): With Pikachu off-screen, step north after walking 99 steps, then talk to Pikachu.

Make Pikachu do the confused emote (D49B=03): With Pikachu off-screen, step west after walking 99 steps, then talk to Pikachu.

Make Pikachu do the disapproval emote (D49B=04): With Pikachu off-screen, step east after walking 99 steps, then talk to Pikachu.

Wild encounters with Pokémon with level above 200

Maybe this is the most useful technique of this glitch. Walking more than 171 steps, you can cause the trainer data corruption. Depending on the trainer, you can provoke a wild encounter with Pokémon like Clefairy, Kangaskhan, Slowbro, Rhydon... There are documented a total of 24 Pokémon, from the level 201 until 223. In the video below, there is a recopilation of all Pokémon obtainables, with their specific trainers.

BGLSG sub-glitch

The BGLSG glitch[2] is a sub-glitch of the Pikachu glitch. It was documented by LanceAndMissingNo. in 2017. [3] The name "BGLSG" is not an acronym, but rather refers to character strings which appear during a glitch text box while performing the glitch.

This glitch has various effects. It causes corruption of the movement of the player. Every move they make, their sprite changes to letters. And, when they walk, the screen moves abruptly. Curiously, nearby NPCs will be frozen, looking south.

If the player go into a building, the sprites will change. For example, the Chansey sprite in Celadon City will change to Blue's sprite. The walking effects will disappear.

In fact, if the player walks into a building or a cave, Pikachu will stay in the door. The only way to get it moving is talking to him. There is also an unusual effect which makes Pikachu run along the screen until it is placed behind the player. However, this effect only occurs when the player is close to Pikachu (for when Pikachu appears in the screen). Thanks to this effect, the player can do the Pikachu glitch in indoor places.
