Multitype (Japanese: マルチタイプ Multitype) is an ability introduced in Generation IV. It is the signature ability of Arceus.

Effect

In battle

Multitype changes the type of the Pokémon with this ability depending on the Plate attached. This ability cannot be transferred with Skill Swap or copied with Trace or Role Play. The item-removing effects of Thief, Covet, Trick, Switcheroo, and Knock Off will not work on a Pokémon with Multitype if it is holding a plate. If any Pokémon other than Arceus has this ability, it does not work. Multitype cannot be suppressed by Gastro Acid and will not be ignored by Mold Breaker, Turboblaze, or Teravolt. In addition, Multitype cannot turn into Mummy. A Pokémon with Multitype is unsoakable.

When a Pokémon Transforms into Arceus, it becomes Arceus's Normal form. If it is holding a plate, it will Transform first into Arceus's current form and will then change type and appearance to the type corresponding to that plate.

Outside of battle

Multitype has no effect outside of battle.

  • In the games, if a Pokémon is given this ability through hacking, the ability will not activate regardless of what Plate the hacked Pokémon is holding. For example, a Magikarp hacked to have this ability will always be Water-type, regardless of what Plate it is holding.
  • Multitype is the only ability that cannot be manipulated by any means; it cannot be switched, copied, cancelled, or ignored, and any plates in use cannot be removed. Even hacking has no effect, as noted above.
