Marking
- This article is about the customizable icons on Pokémon. For the immutable markings on Pokémon that were introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield, see Mark. For the icon that indicates a Pokémon's game of origin, see origin mark.
Markings (Japanese: マーキング marking or マーク mark), previously also known as marks prior to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, are customizable symbols associated with a Pokémon. They are visible in the Pokémon Storage System and on the Pokémon summary screen. They were introduced in the Generation III games.
Pokémon can be marked with any combination of markings. A Pokémon will keep its marking settings if traded to another Trainer. Markings can be freely adjusted, even by Trainers that are not the Pokémon's Original Trainer.
Modification
In all games in which they are present, the player can adjust a Pokémon's markings in the Pokémon Storage System.
In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, the player can also adjust a Pokémon's markings on the Condition page of the PokéNav when using the Search function.
From Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 onward, the player can also adjust a Pokémon's markings on the Pokémon summary screen by tapping their icons on the touch screen.
Properties
In Generation III, there were four markings: ●, ■, ▲, and ♥︎. In Generation IV, two more markings were introduced and the existing ones were reordered, making the full list ●, ▲, ■, ♥︎, ★, and ♦︎.
From Generation III to VI, markings are either present or not present. In Generation VII, colors were added to markings, with the option of making any marking either blue or pink (markings from Generation VI are turned into blue markings). Pink was changed to red in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.

In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, the Pokémon Box includes a "make a favorite" mark along with the other previously available markings, which acts similarly to marking favorites in Pokémon GO. The player can sort their box with favorites on top and will be given a warning if they attempt to transfer a favorite Pokémon.
Function
Markings have no explicit effect or purpose except what the player may invent for them.
In many online communities, players conventionally use them to mark which of a Pokémon's IVs are the maximum of 31; typically, the markings represent a maximum IV in HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed, in that order. Pink markings are often used to indicate IVs of 0.
Other uses
The same set of six markings are used in the Marking Map app on the Pokétch in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
