Being immune to both {{t|Normal}}- and {{type|Fighting}} [[move]]s, the Ghost [[type]] is the only type with more than one immunity. However, these immunities can be removed by the [[move]]s {{m|Foresight}} or {{m|Odor Sleuth}}, or ignored by {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} with the {{Abilities}} {{a|Scrappy}} or {{a|Mind's Eye}}. In [[Generation I]] only, Ghost-type Pokémon cannot be [[Paralysis|paralyzed]] by {{m|Lick}}, and are affected by {{m|Bide}}, {{m|Counter}}, {{m|Seismic Toss}}, {{m|SonicBoom}}, and {{m|Super Fang}}, despite all of these aforementioned moves being Normal-type, and in [[Generation]]s {{gen|II}} and {{gen|III}} only, Ghost-type Pokémon are immune to {{m|Glare}}. Starting in [[Generation VI]], Ghost-type Pokémon are immune to being trapped by all {{cat|trapping moves}} and [[Ability|Abilities]], including [[bound|binding]] (e.g. the effect of {{m|Infestation}}) and are also guaranteed to be able to [[escape]] from battles against [[wild Pokémon]] regardless of {{stat|Speed}}. Ghost-type Pokémon are also unique in the fact that they have a type-specific [[status move]]: {{m|Curse}}, which works differently for Ghost-type Pokémon than it does for other Pokémon.

Since {{type|Steel}} Pokémon no longer resist Ghost-type moves as of [[Generation VI]], the Ghost type is tied with the {{t|Dragon}} type for being the least resisted type, being resisted by the {{t|Dark}} type and ineffective against the {{t|Normal}} type. Currently, only {{rf|Hisuian}} {{p|Zorua}} and {{p|Zoroark}} resist both Ghost- and {{type|Fighting}} moves, while only the {{p|Litleo}} and {{p|Shroodle}} families resist both Ghost-type and {{type|Fairy}} moves (except when Trick-or-Treat is considered). Most Ghost-type Pokémon can learn {{m|Will-O-Wisp}} and other [[status condition]]-inducing moves.

In [[Pokémon Contest]]s, Ghost-type moves are typically {{OBP|Clever|condition}} moves, but some may be any of the other Contest conditions.

As of [[Generation IX]], {{PAGESINCATEGORY:Ghost-type Pokémon|pages}} {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} or {{#expr: ({{PAGESINCATEGORY:Ghost-type Pokémon|pages}}/{{numpkmn}}*100) round2}}% of all Pokémon are Ghost-type (counting those that are Ghost-type in at least one of their [[List of Pokémon with form differences|forms]], including [[regional form]]s), maiking it the third rarest type after {{t|Fairy}} and before {{t|Dragon}} and {{t|Electric}}.

As of [[Generation IX]], [[move]]s or 3.72% of all moves are Ghost-type (excluding those that are Ghost-type only under certain circumstances), causing it to tie with {{t|Bug}} as the 5th rarest type among moves, after {{t|Ice}} and {{t|Fairy}} and before {{t|Poison}}. Prior to [[Generation IV#Advances in gameplay|changes in Generation IV]], all damaging Ghost-type moves were [[physical move|physical]], but they may now also be [[special move|special]] depending on the attack.
