Symbiotic relationships refer to any interaction between the members of two different species.
The recorded interactions are currently based on Pokedex entry data.
Mutualism
Is when both species equally benefit from the interaction, including:
- Shellder and Slowking gain equal benefit, Shellder gets food whilst Slowking acquires a higher intellect
- Seadra aides Corsola by providing protection from predation, in return Corsola acts as refuge for Seadra
- Flygon aides Krookodile by whipping up a sandstorm to conceal it, the two share the captured prey
Commensalism
Refers to one species benefitting whilst the other gains neither benefit or harm, for example:
- Torterra is also known as the "moving forest", its growing trees serves as a nest site for small Pokémon
Autotrophs
Refers to a species that obtains their energy through means outside of the consumption of another organism such as photosynthesis.
- The Bulbasaur line, Oddish, Exeggutor, Skiploom,Sunflora are known to gain energy from the sun
- The Magnemite, Electabuzz feed on electricity supplies for energy
- The Drowzee and Hypno, whom has a particular liking for Komala, feed on dreams
- Sunkern are said to only eat dewdrops
Predation
Refers to one species being eaten by another, in which only the predator benefits.
Herbivory
- Caterpie, Weedle rely on a diet of leaves
- Butterfree,Combee line, Mothim, Cutiefly line eat flower nectar
- Pikachu eat lightning-roasted berries
- Diglett eat vegetables and plant roots
- Abra eat berries
- Natu forages for food on the ground, though is often seen eating food from cactus'
- Marill feeds on aquatic plants
Omnivorous
- Flareon breathes fire to cook Berries or captured prey
- Snorlax is capable of digesting any food including Muk's poison
- Poochyena is said to be an omnivore
Carnivorous
Examples of predation include:
- Pidgeotto and Crabrawler eat Exeggcute
- Pidgeot and Fearow preys on fish pokemon. Only Pidgeot is noted to eat Magikarp, picked from near the surface of water
- Spearow preys on bug Pokemon
- Sandshrew dig holes to trap bug Pokemon
- Ekans eats the eggs of bird Pokémon including Pidgey and Spearow
- Golbat and Crobat hunt for the blood of both Pokémon and people
- Golduck,Poliwhirl, Lapras, Vaporeon actively hunts in the water for fish Pokémon
- Dewgong, Wingull, Pelipper, Wailmer, and Wailord eat Wishiwashi
- Alolan Grimer and Muk prey on Trubbish and Garbodor
- Cloyster actively hunt for Slowpoke tails, even on land
- Kingler's pincers allow it to prey on Shellder and Cloyster
- Omastar's fangs allow it prey on Shellder
- Aipom eat Bounsweet
- Sneasel hunt in packs to steal eggs to be eaten
- Taillow, Swellow, and Starly prey on Wurmple
- Sableye eat Carbink
- Vibrava is said to preserve its prey in the sand and digest it with fluids before consumption
- Glalie eat their prey, including Vanillite, in one whole bite
- Starly eats the small ball on Cherubi's stem
- Lumineon eats Staryu's arms
- Weavile eat both Alolan Vulpix and Alolan Sandshrew
- Archeops preys on Omanyte
- Mandibuzz preys on Cubone
- Heatmor burns through Durant's body to feed on them
- Unnamed bird Pokémon prey on Scatterbug and Spewpa
- Talonflame prey on bird pokemon including Wingull and Pikipek
- Toucannon and other unspecified bird Pokémon eat Bounsweet
- Gumshoos eats Rattata and Raticate
- Mareanie and Toxapex eat the branches of coral on Corsola's head
Arbok, Vileplume Bellsprout line, Kabutops, Aerodactyl, Noctowl, Spinarak, Ariados, Chinchou line, Quagsire, Umbreon, Clamperl line, Metagross, Carnivine are all known predatory Pokémon, though it is unclear what they prey on.
Parasitism
Refers to one species gains sole benefit at the direct and harmful expense of another. Examples include:
- Shellder feeds off of Slowbro's tail and food scraps, its poison is known to have a hallucinogenic effect
Competition
Competition between species can result in both being negatively impacted due to scarce resources, such as:
- Meowth and Murkrow compete for shiny objects to add to their collections
- Pinsir has an intense rivalry with Heracross, though Alola Vikavolt is a larger threat
- Sableye competes against Gabite for gems and Carbink
- Zangoose and Seviper have an intense rivalry
- Salamence and Garchomp compete directly for food
- Mothim steals honey and competes for flowers against Combee and Vespiquen
