The leader unmasked

The annual event was created as a ploy by the young people and Mayor of Diglett Village, who assumes the leading role of the band of thieves, after the elderly refused to leave their homes and farming lifestyle for the purpose built retirement home in the younger people's town. The Mayor explained that they do not wish to harm their elderly parents, rather they want to check up on them and keep them in top physical condition. Though the band of Diglett thieves is based on actual thieves who once pillaged the Diglett Village residents of their valuable Diglett.

Ash, his friends and Team Rocket first learned of the threat from the local Town Council members, and soon encountered the band of thieves that same night. Joining forces with Team Rocket, Ash and ashfr decided to spy on the thieves in their home village while trying to incapacitate their main mode of transport, Dodrio. While doing so, they learned that the thieves are the children of the Diglett Village residents when they were caught by surprise by Rita and Sue and spotted by the band's leader. The Diglett thieves agreed not to ride in on their Dodrio in tomorrow's scheduled raid, while Ash and his friends agreed to keep the ploy a secret and play along.

During the next day's charade, Ash and his friends used their Pokémon to help fight the Diglett thieves. Though the thieves kept themselves safe and employed electric-proof helmets, hoses to counter Fire attacks, umbrellas to counter Water-type attacks, and headphones to keep them from being hit by sound attacks. Most of them ended up in pitfall traps that were dug up by Team Rocket and the elderly townspeople. The Diglett soon carried off the the thieves and the leader hoisted a white flag into the air to announce a truce. However, Team Rocket, who were unaware of the secret ploy, went on the attack and attempted to bomb the thieves to protect the Diglett Village elders. Ash was forced to send them blasting off with one of Pikachu's Thunderbolts to avoid the situation escalating and keep the band of Diglett thieves myth alive.
